If we, as parents, are background checked just to drive kids on a field trip - you would CERTAINLY think that someone holding a position as a CFO would have EXTENSIVE background checks done BEFORE handling any monies!!!! Come on now people, let's use our heads!

I dont think that Sandi did this alone. People may be shocked when it is all said and done.
But on a sidenote, I drive on many field trip and have never had to submit to a background check.

Thats the great management for you at CIS.

How sad indeed and over a two year time span! From the beginning, a number of people wondered how the funds received from the State were being allocated. For the first couple of years, there were no textbooks - even for math! Just like a company, the people at the top must assume the responsibility. To say that better measures are in place now is fine and good, but does that reduce their responsibility in being negligable about background checks or regular monitoring of accounting practices. I think this speaks extremely poorly of the Board as well as the head administrators. I am so glad we made the decision to leave when we did. I can't say that embezzlement - or anything else they might uncover- would come as a surprise to me.

As a former student at CIS, I saw Ms. Vielbaum everyday. She was pretty nice to me and the other students, and having to accept what she did is hard. What she did is a BIG thing, somthing that is never going to go away. I dont understand why the "administration" the ones who "were in charge of everything" the ones we "trusted" could let this get so out of hand. She did it right under all of our noses. We cant just blame one person, this guilt is on all of our shoulders.

Im sorry for my friend, Ms V's daughter
She, more than all of us, has to live with the embarrassment.

If the least we can do from this is is learn a lesson, than so be it- its a hard one to learn... but life's full of pain and pain is the only way to see the good and the bad in people.

Peace Out.

in response to Melanie - Charlotte - your comment intrigued me regarding the inference that she did not act alone. Anything you'd care to share?

The management at CIS is very poor. The administration as well as the CIS School Board were fully aware that there were concerns and issues regarding the finances of the school. To now say that they were just "too trusting" is entirely not true. Richard Beall should not be the director of Carolina International School any longer as he was, at best, ignorant and not doing background checks on the people working with the students. I won't even specify the worst case scenario. However, either one demonstrates that he is not suitable for the position.
