Harrisburg Event: From Fun Day to `Easter egg nightmare'

“It was a great concept, and we want to continue to make it better.”

The Harrisburg Egg Drop and Family Fun Day was 'a great day of fun,' according to some people, and 'a disaster' to others.

Organizers said they planned for about 4,000 people, but nearly 10,000 showed up.

Amid a chaotic rush for prize-laden plastic eggs, about 30 children got separated from their parents. Some parents said they saw adults fighting over prizes, and people grabbing more than the five allotted eggs. And the thunder and lightning didn't help.

The free event had lots to offer: food, games, inflatable play structures, prizes and a helicopter that dropped 20,000 plastic Easter eggs. Read more

My three children and I were at the egg drop. When the parents rushed the fields and did not follow instructions all chaos started. I found a little girl maybe three alone and crying. She was terrified and could not find her grandma. I could not leave her,I was afraid the wrong person would get her. Bad elements can be anywhere in our community. Anyway, my kids were with a friend of mind so I took this girl to the stage with all the hundreds of children to find her grandma. We didn't get any help from organizers. They were too overwhelmed. Finally after about 10 to 15 minutes we found her grandma. She was terrified also. It is just a shame that something that was meant to be family fun turned out to be so chaotic. I hope the organizers learned a valuable lesson on planning and safety for next time. Also, shame on all the greedy parents who would not follow the rules and stay off the field!!!

This is exactly what you get when you hold a "free" event. All the riff raff and trashy people come out and the fun event bocomes a nightmare. I would much rather attend an event like this were parents pay 5 to 10 dollars a child. There would be 1/10 the ammount of people and 20 times more the fun.
