Amused, before my parents died, the last in 1993, I would drive up the Coal Region regularly to visit them. Depending on my mood I would take Route 248 or 100. Back then, as you know, there were thousands of acres of farmland visible and no housing. Ten years later I drove back the same way and was shocked with what I saw, especially off 248 and route 512.

I went to a pizzeria I knew in the area and was shocked to see the family had sold Feast a Pizza to a blonde non Italian wearing a black jump suit with an arrogant attitude. At that time I knew the Valley was finished.

On the positive side white collar jobs came in along with the warehouses, creating jobs for the locals.

If blame is to be applied, we can blame HUD, local politicians, developers from NY, Philly and elsewhere and some of the people who moved in.

I know people who commute to NJ and NY regularly and some of them regret moving here as do a lot of people who moved to the Poconos. The commute is too much for them but they can't afford to move back.

For better or worse, PA has been altered permenatly; hopefully the young people will grow up to appreciate what the Valley has to offer. I just wish they would stop building all of those distribution center. THe BMW center off 33 is big enough inside to built 747s.

Brighton Beach wasn't always Russian, so again you're proved your lack of knowledge. Plus there is still a lot of Turkish Muslims there. I'm not even close to Russian,(unless drink Russian Vodka counts) even though their culture had some good ideas. I moved here when I retired, to watch over my investment property. I was wise enough to buy property, in this area, when it was cheap and ROI was good. It's all been long paid for, so even though the income hasn't grown as much as I'd like, it has all paid for itself, many times over, so until the gravy stops flowing, I'll hang on to it. I'll sticking around the area until, until I think the winters are too cold, but the way the recent winters have been, that doesn't look like its going to happen, any time soon. You must not know many MIT graduates, or you don't try to showing off your caviler attitude to them.

If you weren't so uneducated, you would learn to use the qoute button and not have to post that. Look I moved to White Haven, is that better for you then Hazleton? Was that a mail order MBA, you got from NYU?

Now THERE we have a definite agreement!! You hit a lot of the nails on the head! HUD has destroyed this area into the zoo that it is becoming, with all the violence and trash. People just don't have self respect there.

And, I do have to agree with the developers. Had the developers not raped the land and built these shoddy homes, then they wouldn't have been sold. Can I blame somone for buying a house on what used to be farmland? Not at all. The house is there, it's in their price range, so they buy it.

But, the ones who do regret the move and can't afford to move back, I can't have any sympathy for them. They should have thought out the move more carefully before taking the plunge. On the weekends, they could've taken a drive to see what the distance would be like and to see if they can handle it. Granted, the traffic would be a lot worse during the work week, but they could've anticipated that. It sounds like some of them leapt before thinking.

Amused, I just got back from a Mother's day dinner at the Hershey Hotel. Expensive but very nice.

Part of the illusion on commuting to New York was created by the New York Newspapers and their advertisements. I used to laugh when I saw ads for homes in the Poconos that stated "Just minutes from New York". My wife would comment, "Yes, 180 minutes".

People fell for it and did not do as you suggested, they should have come up during the week not on a slow Sunday morning when traffic was light.

Amused, Hud has destroyed most small cities in the United States. Towns like Springfield, Mass., Portland, Maine, Rockville, Illinois and many similar cities have had low lives moved in by the government. I have a friend in Columbus, Ohio and he constantly moans about what happened to that town.

To Joe poli,
DO you read what you write?
Or do you just have the "I'm so much better than you, I'm so much smarter and harder working" speech in a word document that you can cut and paste into the comments box?

When I read the article I was hoping no one would bring up the New York New Jersey connection but I was wrong.
The jealous, jealous, envious, low life $10.00 and hour, yellow toothed, pickup truck driving, scrapple and ring baloney eating, two dollar haircut, 20 year old baseball cap wearing, low IQ, psychic predictor, locals just could not resist geting their rocks off on someone else's misfortune.
I have a suggestion for you Zeke: why don't you got over to the developments and tell them how you feel to their faces. Or are you going to hide in you hovel with your mangy animals and hide behind your computer.
How do you know all of those people are from NY or NJ? I know people who live there and they are Valley natives.
Bravo !!!! Thank You soooo much for saying that. I am from the west coast and moved to Macungie and my tax dollars and everyone else tax dollars in that development paid for them to have new schools, parks and township buildings. So if they don't like it they can stay in the hills with there guns and eat there roadkill and let other who contribute to growth of the township live in peace.

Being from the left coast you would defend a gay guy, who likes little boys. By the way it's their guns, not there guns.

Yes, I was up at 1 Am. Taking a break from Homework.

You see, at 42, my job requires constant continuing education. I'm currently enrolled in a school that only accepts 200 per year and less than 100 graduate......

That's why I'm responding to you here at 5:03 Am. Studying.

My wife, a PA Dutch Farm girl who has never lived outside of the Valley except for when she did her internship at Penn? She has two degrees.

I moved here 20 years ago because I couldn't Stand living around all of the Self Important a$$monkeys that filled up N.J.

I've been generally happy.

But I'm left wondering. Why do you live here? You say your a "Coal Cracker", but you're obviously embarrased by your own people. You "Moved Back Here" to retire? Why is that? Not successful enough to sustain your lifestyle where you were?

All legitimate questions since you claim to like it here, but hate the locals.

As for Smarter than me? I doubt it Joe. I doubt you could even complete this school, let alone any of the others I've had to attend just to keep my job. My job, which by the way doesn't pay $9.50 per hour.

Rather my job pays enought to: Pay the $3K a month mortgage, pay the $14K per year tuition bill for my son's college, pay the $14K a year private school bill for my daughter, pay the car payments, all the bills and put food on my table and wine in the rack (Yes, that local wine. After traveling all over Europe and the middle east for work I find I'm partial to the cheap local stuff.).

And no, I'm not going to give you any "Facts" until you give me some.....validate your hatred for the locals for me. Then we'll talk.

Between now and then you're just an old man whose bitter because he didn't make or save enough, and had to move back home and face his roots.

Must be a tough thing to reconcile.

Smarter than me? Not on your best day.
