Are we "Justified?"

I noticed that the show Justified has been picked up for a 4th season. And I must say that I was a bit surprised when the show was picked up for a second season. I watched a few episodes and found it to be very exaggerated and inaccurate. It portrays Harlan as a town where the majority of the citizens are drugged out dangerous criminals who terrorize the honest citizens. So of course I scoffed when I recently read an article by some famous critic, in some big town that hailed the show as being authentic and an accurate portrayal of Harlan. I scoffed at the article Until.... RECENTLY!

Have you taken notice of just how bad the violent crime rate seems to be sky rocketing in Harlan? The drug heads are becoming more and more bold in their attempts to gain their pill money at all cost. This town is getting more dangerous than the large cities. Just recently a local pawn shop was robbed at gun point right downtown Harlan in the middle of the day. And the robbery took place within a couple of blocks of the Harlan city police department and the courthouse. And then about a year ago a man jumped across the service counter at the post office and grabbed a hand full of cash and ran. Again right during the middle of the day and within shouting distance of the city police department and the county sheriffs office. Then there was the Pizza Hut robbery just a few months ago, and an armed robbery at the Coal Bucket, a car jacking in Wallins....etc

And it seems like here recently whenever you pick up the Harlan Daily there is some new story about an armed robbery, or a house break in or, a convenient store hold up.

Whats going on in this once peaceful safe little town? It seems that we are starting to resemble the show Justified more every day? The only difference is, we dont have a Raylan Givens around to keep the criminal element under control.

Whew! Harlan we are now living up to our BAD reputation and lending credence to shows like Justified. But is there a solution? And if there is, what would that solution be? It is flat out getting dangerous in this town.

It appears as if the show Justified is starting to sound like a pretty accurate documentary of Harlan! Sad but true!

Well...you just verified "justified" is a good picture of what is happening. Harlan is peaceful until something bad happens to you, then it is bad.

If the truth be known, it is no better or worse than any other town in the hills. I think the law used to be corrupt in Harlan County. I don't live there anymore, so I can't speak for now.

I heard of justified, but don't know what channel carries it. Would you be so kind as to tell me where it is found?

The show airs on Fx. I dont know what channel that would be for you but thats where it airs. I myself dont like the show.

And I dont know how long it has been since you lived in Harlan. But if you lived here NOW you would have to admit that the violent crime rate is getting absolutely ridiculous around this area. I have lived here all my life and I have never seen it this bad before. The pill heads have no respect for anything or anyone. Heck they're even breaking into churches around here to get their pill money. Maybe it is a region wide problem. But Harlan was never this bad before. Especially in my lifetime. It makes a man wonder about going out unarmed anymore. And I dont think the crime rate is due to any kind of law enforcement corruption It's simply a drug problem and the local law is becoming overwhelmed. It seems like EVERYONE is on something around this place. And they'll do anything and hurt anyone to get their money for their fix of the day.

I didn't care for the show at all. In my opinion it seems like its just spinning its wheels in the mud and portraying Harlan people as bad dressing ignorant stupid dug dealing hillbillies. but apparently it does have a huge following. It is a very popular show with many fans world wide.

Now I must say that I did LOVE the character Mags Bennett in season two. Margo Martindale who played Mags did one heck of a job. To date, she's probably the most memorable character from the entire show.

I love the show. Justified may have some stereotypes regarding southeastern Kentucky, but you have to admit, when you see some of those odd characters on there, don't they look like the guy you saw at Wal Mart last week?

O.K you may have a point there.

Some of the characters do look like they just walked out of the "Head of the Holler" Up air at Cranks! Or perhaps Pine Mountain.

But I myself, still do not like the show.

Watched the first two seasons. It was okay. But, last season was terrible! One time they would be in Harlan next time they would be in Lexington and they had about two or three story lines going. It was difficult to follow!

I thought Tommy was from Mclean, VA? That's what his posts always said. He seemed a lot more literate than you, as well. I get the feeling this is James Bays. Why the name change? I make it to London on occasion and would be happy to have a nice talk with you. Create a profile and send me a pm and we'll discuss it further.
