Truck driver dies in crash

The cab of the truck belonging to D&M Trucking was loaded onto a wrecker Wednesday. Roger Garrett, of Pennington Gap, Va., died in the truck crash.
slideshow A coal truck driver lost his life in a horrific crash Wednesday on U.S. 421 at Chevrolet after his loaded truck collided with a tractor and trailer.

Kentucky State Police Det. Michael Cornett reconstructed the crash, which occurred around 12:30 p.m.

According to Cornett, Shannon N. Wright, 37, of Pikeville, was attempting to make a left turn from KY 3001 onto U.S. 421 in a 2002 International tractor and trailer and pulled out in front of a 2009 Peterbilt tractor and trailer coal truck operated by Roger D. Garrett, 54, of Pennington Gap, Va., who was traveling north on U.S. 421.

Cornett said Garrett swerved to the right in an attempt to avoid impact but was unable to completely avoid Wright. Garrett’s truck then sideswiped Wright’s truck. Garrett’s truck veered to the right due to impact and left the roadway, entered a ditch and then impacted a rock embankment. The coal truck trailer overturned onto its side, and the coal spilled onto the highway and shoulder. The Wright truck turned around and came to a position of final rest on KY 3001.

Garrett was pronounced dead at the scene by Harlan County deputy coroner Jim Rich. The Harlan County Rescue Squad removed Garrett from the wreckage. The truck was mangled and required the assistance of an excavator, front-end loader and wrecker to remove it from the rock embankment. Rich said Garrett died from blunt force trauma. Wright was treated and released at Harlan ARH Hospital.

Wright was issued a citation for allegedly not meeting requirements by law on the tractor and trailer.

Harlan County Emergency Management Director David McGill said approximately 200 gallons of diesel fuel and some oil leaked onto the ground. McGill dispatched a Hazmat team from London to handle the clean-up.

Assisting at the scene were Sgt. Mark Gillingham, troopers Edward Abner and James Earl Hensley; Harlan County, Harlan City and Sunshine fire departments; constables Aaron Whitehead, Robert Haywood and Frank Pennington; Harlan EMS, Phillips Excavation Company, Auto Care, the state highway department, Pennington’s Wrecker Service, Harlan County Sheriff’s Office, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement and Kentucky Fish and Wildlife.
