The proposed 70 cents per tax on cigarettes would put an unfair burden to a select group of people to get us out of our mess . This problem belongs to everyone in ky not just smokers . Rick Nelson has come up with a few more creative ideas and wish he would share some of them with us .

I totally agree.... it sounds like they're just looking for a specific group to target. Why doesn't the cola and coffee drinkers have to worry about tax increases, that's addictions and habits as well. Oh let's not forget the beer drinkers too...

I agree that this is unfair. I am a non-smoker,yet, still see this as another way the government is trying to take freedom away.
Good thing I don't smoke, it isn't allowed anywhere!

"Annual health care costs in Kentucky directly attributable to smoking total $1.17 billion, with $380 million of that total coming from the state and federally funded Medicaid program."

How is a cigarette tax unfair, my tax dollars go to pay for smokers health care cost because they are too ignorant to see that they are killing themselves and everyone around them.

They should put a $7 tax on each pack that way you couldn't afford to smoke. I guess it doesnt matter much though in the next 10 to 20 years smoking tobacco will become illegal.

cola drinkers, coffee drinkers and drinking alcohol doesn't kill you and everyone within 10 feet of you at the same time. I can drink a beer without you having too if we are in the same room. You smoke a cigarrette and everyone in the room is exposed to the smoke.

Since you are talking about rights, Do I not have just as much right to breathe fresh air as you do to smoke. Do your children not have the right to not be exposed to smoke in their home. Any parent who smokes in the same house or vehicle as children should be put in jail for child abuse.

Be Fair doesn't smoke either but still don't think that all the problems in this state should fall on the smokers . that is stupid . I don't remember the word rights even come into the conversation . That would be the same logic as taxing the methadone clinics or patrons . Is it their fault too ? Too stupid to even comment about . Outlaw cigs ,outlaw outdoor burning outlaw cars because they also polute ? We have a deficit problem . We need revenue and every person in Kentucky must bear the burden . Go hug a tree !! Just don't burn it !!! Too stupid !!

not the only health problem but smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in the nation and cost more health care dollars th

from new england journal of medicine research study, "Health care costs for smokers at a given age are as much as 40 percent higher than those for nonsmokers"

According to the article, "smokers take an average of nearly eight more sick days annually than their non-smoking co-workers," accounting for 42% of all sick days taken

But compare that to the costs of cigarette smoking in healthcare. Smoking costs the US up to $167 billion, every year.$75 billion of that in direct medical expenses, with the rest in lost productivity from ill patients missing work. That's more than $3,400 a year for health insurance coverage and lost productivity each smoker!

"And while smokers pay around $5 a pack, that same pack of cigarettes costs society $40. Yep, for each pack of cigarettes sold in America we pay $40 in healthcare costs."

So I hope they tax your ass $10 on each pack. smoking is destroying the american healthcare system.

Now what poor individual are you going to tax now ! This lack of revenue problem is everyones problem so we need to come up with a solution that (hurts)us all egually !

You are so right! Being obese is also a preventable medical problem! There are alot of medical diagnosis that are preventable and for those that are not, MOST patients are non-complient with there care. They wont to do whatever instead of what the Dr. tells them. and like i said its MY RIGHT to smoke and no one elses to tell me to quit. Just like its your right to drink soda and eat a BIG MAC!

Just think about this if they cut out smoking altogether were would they get that tax money. Who would they rob next.who or what would they put that excess tax on then gas food utilities. And if they put the tobacco companies out of business look at all those people that would be out of work. They better stop raising the tax money on tobacco because if they don't it will lead to more robbery and theft. I don't smoke but I don't think this is fair to people that do. It's alright to stop smoking in a restaurant or bar but you can set in their and get drunk and get in your car and kill someone. And they still haven't proved to me that smoking kills you.And if so just think what drinking dose to you breaks up families cause liver damage cause accidents. So to sum it up smoking is no worse than drinking.

I thought tax was the final blow that caused the US to separate from England. If they could see us now, they wouldn't have wasted their time!
