Every time I go to Dons Super Saver or any other grocery store in Harlan the funniest thing happens to me.

When I go to check out at the register, the cashier always asks me ďIs that an EBT cardĒ(food stamp card). And I always say no itís a debit card. This never happens to me at any of the stores I shop at in Virginia. So I am under the impression that the cashiers assume if you shop at Dons or live in Harlan that you are on food stamps. Does this happen to any of you?

It just seams odd that when you are in Harlan, and Harlan only that you are assumed to be on the Program. But any where else, it is assumed that you actually have money in a bank.

Virgina also has to enter it in to the register...

Following came from VA Foodstamp info site on line...

"The Virginia EBT Card is like a bank debit card that holds the Food Stamp benefits that are assigned to you each month, you can use it anywhere you see the Questģ logo, and every time you use your card, you get a receipt showing the amount of benefits left in your account."

But in Virginia they ask... Debit or Credit? But in Harlan the question is EBT or Debit.

As a cashier in Harlan, I can tell you for a FACT..that there are way more people with food stamps than you would think! Probably 80% of the people I see come through my line have food stamps, its not like its a rare thing here. Its the facts! Thats why you're asked. It's not hard to say "No, it's debit." and go on about your business.

I've never been asked if my debit card is an EBT card anywhere in Harlan.

It also depends on when you come over here. If it's the 1st-3rd of the month, most people are going to be using EBT cards.

There's snobs everywhere you go,just smile and keep going... That's what i do. Getting a smile out of some people is just impossible. There's nothing that bad (besides death) that a person cannot show a little smile of kindness! It's a shame.
shops there often

I have never been asked if my debit card is a EBT card. I always have to tell the cashier that it is a debit, but haven't been asked and I shop there a lot. The most I experience about rude cashiers are they usally stand there while ringing your groceries and carry a conversation with the bagger or the cashier on the next register. The worst I have seen in this store is over in produce. Tom is a freakin pervert and Josh is a pill headed asshole. Eric better take notice of Josh and get rid of his produce stealing ass. I know Josh does oxy's and is stealing that store blind. Back to Tom, every time I am in there he stares and gives me the creeps. And I have watched he does it to many women.

This is the answer I was waiting for; I just wanted to hear it from some one who works as a cahier so that my opinion would be validated. Because itís so obvious that most of Harlan is on Food stamps. And most of (other places) arenít. That is why I get asked the question when I shop in Harlan, because as you said only 20% of people shop with a debit card caring money they actually worked for. Now don't get me wrong, I am sure that a fraction of your 80% actually needs food stamps. But it's the majority who refuse to work and let tax payers support them that inflates the number to 80%.

And I agree that itís not hard to say "No, it's debit." and I actually take pride in saying it.

I agree. Sandy is a smart allic! When she does talk to the customers, she uses that loud voice of hers, and if you don't see her coming, her loud voice will scare you!! She is soooo hateful acting!!

I WILL GO THERE

I AM FROM HERE...

I travel to Norton, Virginia 6 days a week to work. Thatís why I know Virginia does not ask for the EBT card.

I understand that work is hard to find in Harlan, but I go to where the work is. Because I think it is my responsibility to provide for my family and not every one elseís. And how do you think people get well off, the get up and go find a job and work hard at that job regardless of where it is or how far it may be.

I understand that a lot of people on food stamps are good people, I already said that earlier. And yes the people on drugs do give the county a bad name, but that is no excuse for not trying to better your own self.

However, because you are poor is no excuse for not becoming something greater than you already are. All it takes is for you to want better for your children and your self, and once you come to terms that living of government is no type of life at all. Maybe, just maybe you may be inspired to take action and do something about it.
