Not much. People of Harlan, understand that coal is dying. I grew tired of all the ups and downs and all the worry about keeping and maintaining a job there and left for greener pastures. The area is dying due to coal dying. All these little mining jobs here and there only add up to MAYBE a hundred jobs or so. There are literally thousands of people fighting for a hundred or so jobs. Wise up people. and Pray

Yes coal is on the way out. I have worked most of my life in coal, so did my Dad. We both have black lung, but that is part of it.
I was just wondering how long they speculate that job will last. I know a little about that part of the mountain, just don't semm like enough coal ther to fool with.

You are right though, doesnt seem like there would be enough coal left in Mary Helen to fool with. At least not easily/cheaply mined coal. Some of the deeper coal is still available up there but seems like i remember hearing about bad water problems in the lower elevation coal seams.

So far, this is what I've heard from a lot of people. It's just "hear-say," but they're supposedly going public with it on Monday. Richard Gilliam and the guy who owns Bunn, yes the coffee pot company has bought all the mines back. They are opening up all the mines and plus opening up an additional mines. They're calling back 800 laid off men and hiring an additional 100. I'm guessing that means the Kentucky and Virginia side. From what I've heard, it's going to be a great company to work for. Higher paid wages, no salary positions, pay rates being $24-$35 an hour, retention bonuses, and it will be a privately owned company again. Supposedly, they already have two huge contracts, I can't remember the names but I think it's Kentucky power and either Tennessee or Georgia power. If this all comes out to be truth, then it will be a major comeback for coal in this county.
