Joe Grishop stated in the Harlan Daily that he met with Daniel Bunn on coal mining jobs and that he had a hand in getting them to bring coal jobs back into Harlan. Thats funny since Daniel Bunn is dead. He died in Jan. And for anyone that didnt know the Bunn jobs have been found out to be a hoax. It was just a way for Pro Contracting to get money from men that needed retraning. They even went as far as giving drug test to men and telling them they had a job just to get money for the drug test. They are crooks and Joe Grishop is a liar. This should be his last term in office. On a side note Joe is fro natural gas. He is against coal. Look on his son's facebook page he is against coal also.

Coal mining jobs may finally be on the rebound in Harlan County.

At least two Harlan mines are reportedly going back into production in the near future.

Harlan County Judge-Executive Joe Grieshop said Daniel Bunn, of Bunn coffeemakers, is behind the reopenings.

According to Eddie Joe Estep, project director for Bunn, the paperwork is currently being finalized that will put approximately 800 people back to work across the Kentucky and Virginia coalfields.

“We’ve had about 1,000 Harlan people come in and put in applications,” said Estep.

Estep said the jobs available will involve the day-to-day operations of running a mine.

“We’re going through the applications and we’re going to try to get the drug testing done in the next two weeks then bring everybody in for orientation,” said Estep.

Grieshop said he expects up to 350 Harlan workers to be on the job soon.

“I was over there last week to see what we could do to help them,” said Grieshop.“Jim Roddy and I went over there to see what we could do as county government to help. The good news is it appears it’s the Alpha mines that are currently vacated here in Harlan County and some mines over in Virginia. Two mines over here. That would give us the potential to put quite a few people back to work.”

Grieshop said the mines have been kept in pretty good shape since they were shut down.

“They have been keeping them in good shape with a skeleton crew,” said Grieshop.

According to Grieshop, the number of jobs should increase later.

“The 350 number is probably a starting point and they’ll grow from there,” said Grieshop.“Bunn said through Mr. Estep that he wanted to put unemployed miners back to work, and that’s good news. If it takes awhile to ramp up, I understand. That’s logical. The goal here is to put thousands of miners back to work over time.”

Grieshop said the employment opportunities come at a good time for Harlan County.

“This is really good news because it wouldn’t be too much longer before we would begin to lose those skilled workers to other regions of the coal industry,” said Grieshop.“Once that occurs, we’re not too likely to get them back. That makes it much more difficult at that time to restart a mining operation if you don’t have skilled workers. This is extremely good news that this is occurring right now.”

It's great that mining jobs are coming back and I'm all for coal production, but what is everyone going to do the next time they layoff or close? Why doesn't Joe work on bringing something in for the future of the County instead of something that we've lived on for the past century. And NO...I'm not talking about Natural Gas or anything that would replace coal. Gas doesn't require workers once the hole is drilled and the pipes are laid anyway. Technology jobs, manufacturing jobs...something that we can stake our future in because whether we mine coal from now until the cows come home, eventually it is going to run out. What will our children's children do then? I guess they'll move away to find work like most of the generations before them.

You are right. They will move away. Welfare State has taken over our lovely County and that is all that will remain. People, wise up and realize that only a small percentage of people in Harlan work. And an even smaller percentage of those actually work coal. Take a look around our community is in MAJOR trouble. Welfare, Govt. checks, Food Stamps, Medical cards, WIC, Food pantries, Clothing Giveways, SWAP, CO OP, and free housing, etc. etc. THIS IS WHAT TRULY DRIVES OUR HARLAN COUNTY ECONOMY AND HAS FOR YEARS NOW. NOT COAL!!!! Young people, get yourself an education and get outa dodge. Just my $0.02 worth.

I guess somebody else needs to get in the dang car and head back over there, because Joe's got egg on his face. According to WYMT, there are NO plans to open up the mines in question.

**WYMT Report**

NORTON, Va.(WYMT)- Last month we told you about hundreds of coal jobs that were supposedly coming back to eastern Kentucky and Virginia.

Thousands of people drove - in some cases several hours - to Norton, Va., for a chance to go back to work.

But Wednesday officials at a company that reportedly owns the idled mines said it's not true and there were never any plans to do that.

Officials with Professional Contracting LLC have been accepting applications for more than 800 coal jobs that they said were coming back to the region with the reopening of several mines.

Thousands of people have been filling out applications to work at the mines, some of which are in Harlan County.

But officials with Bristol, Va.-based Alpha Natural Resources said contrary to what applicants are hearing from Professional Contracting, they have no plans to reopen any of the mines.

"We have been contacted by a number of media outlets asking about these jobs, but none of this is true," Alpha spokeswoman Samantha Davison said. "There are no plans at this time to reopen any of our mines and we have no arrangement with this company whatsoever."

Davison said, to her knowledge, Alpha has never been affiliated with Professional Contracting.

"It is a shame that people are led to believe that there are Alpha jobs out there," she said. "There are not at this time."

One out-of -work miner - who did want his name revealed - said nothing seemed suspicious when he went to apply.

"Nothing seemed shady or out of the way to me," he said. "It seemed just like any other job I've ever applied for."

Alpha laid off hundreds of workers at four mines in Harlan County back in January.

WYMT contacted the Better Business Bureau in Roanoke, Va. Officials there said no complaints have been filed against professional contracting as of Wednesday.

We tried but were unable to get in touch with Professional Contracting's owner, Eddie Joe Estep.

I think it's a pretty sick scheme to get less fortunate peoples money. They're haveing a hard enough time trying to make it as it is,Could you imagine haveing a wife & a child and no income;trying your best to find another job.Eventually your unemployment runs out.I don't care too take a job-occupation makeing less wadges I cannot even find that,I only want to provide for my family.I can't even do that right and hold my head up as a man.It breaks my heart I cannot take care of my children the way my ancestors took care of their's.
