What is the Law

London, KY

#1 Dec 5, 2012
What is the law on Harlan County people driving using TN tags? I have seen so many people living in the county, and yes, they live in the county all the time, driving with TN tags. How do they do this and get by. What is the law on this?

It's because you don't have to have insurance in Tn! Just give them a Tennessee address and you get your car tagged at the Tn courthouse! No proof of insurance!

Info is correct. It is illegal to have a car tagged in TN and have a KY license. I was pulled over by a county cop a few years back. I got the fourth degree about having TN tags and living in KY. Funny part was when I told him I lived in TN, was visiting family and the license he was holding was issued in TN. He didn't know what to say. We laughed about it and he apologized.

Wrong. That is just a rumor. You absolutely do have to have insurance in Tennessee.

I do believe that 20 years ago, you would be correct, you were not required to have insurance in Tennessee. But today, the law in Tennessee is the same as in KY.

Not quite 20 years ago, I was 18 when I got married and my husbands father lived in Tn. We went down there and got tags and gave them his dads address, no insurance required. I know it was stupid, we were young and dumb but we did it just to keep from paying an extra bill every month. That was 6 years ago. It may have changed now, I'm not sure but 6 years ago it was valid!

Regardless of the laws in Tennessee or any other state; if you are driving, visiting, or whatever another City or State, you have to abide by their laws whether it be insurance, tinted windows or whatever. Doesn't matter. A person that moves to another state that has that states license, etc. is not considered to be a resident of the current unless they have been there for 180 days. So in simple terms, once you move you have 180 days to transfer your stuff.

If you own property in both states you can get your vehicles tagged either state as long as you stay so many days out of the month at both places. I mean how are they gonna prove how many days you were each place?

Please go research Tennessee laws. You absolutely are required to have insurance, and if you are pulled over without it, you get a ticket.

It's state law and you can find it anywhere you want on the net.

I think the big thing is that Tenn has no tax on vehicles...at least that's what I've always heard is the big draw with tagging cars in Tn.

You must pay to tag it. You just don't have to pay property tax on it every year. It's a one time deal. If you buy a car from TN and you live here you must pay the sales tax, transfer fees and the like just as if you do it here. They only get you one time for that if you live in TN. Yes you do have to have insurance and must have it when you register the vehicle. But if you fail to have insurance after that then your butt is in the sling if you let it go. I don't recomend you letting it go. Plus insurance is a third if what it is here. I can't wait to move. Only difference is the state sales tax rate. The deal with people living in TN and working here in KY is that you pay the state of KY the income tax and you don't get it back from TN because they have no state income tax. Only federal.
