I was wondering if anyone else ever heard this story.
I have found caves in the mountain and some of them have bars on them so you can't get in.

I have heard stories of gold and silver being hidden in Stone Mtn. I did alot of research in my youth about the "Swift" legend. He apparently was a pirate or counterfit currency maker and was suppost to have hidden his loot in caves in Appalachia. Oliver Swift to be exact. Ever heard of it?

JC, you found gold you just didnt know it. At 1500.00 a pound you could have found a "pot" of gold!!! LOL

One of the Swift legends talked about hiding his loot in a cave where the horse hoofs pounding the ground made a hollow sound. Indians named "Pound Gap" for this.

Also one of the Seift tales, tells of him marking his way to one of the caves with a rifle in a tree knot. Back in like the late 70's an old flint lock "hog rifle" ( how they described it) was found in an old rotted out tree on the VA side of the mountain up towards Appalachia VA area.

Well I reccon the caved with bars on them used to be used as secret places where the government would hide gold. I saw it in a book one time. Can't member the name of it but it used to be in the old cranks school library. Speaking of cranks school... I wonder if anyone ever dug up the time capsule.

I have seen bars over caves on both Pine Mtn and Cumberland Mtn (Stone Mtn). I was told it was because of "bad air" in the caves. There is a Pine Mtn cave club, forgot their name, maybe their members put the bars there for saftey.

Don't get yer hopes up.

Every small town in America shares the same old urban legends. Every town has a "Lost treasure!" A ghost hitchhiker who gets into your car and then mysteriously disappears.(Most of the time its a woman ghost.) And then you have the "Babysitter" on the phone with a killer that is located inside the house with her!! And one that I thought was true all my life until I turned 18 or so. The one where a woman supposedly pulls up to a service station and the attendant makes her get out of the car and then explains to the irate woman that there is a murderer laying behind her seat with an axe in his hands..

These are all just urban legends. So I wouldn't go digging around on Stone Mountain in hopes of finding a lost treasure of gold. All you're gonna get for your trouble is blisters and back pain.

Raised in Smith, lived there my whole life. We played in every nook and cranny on that mountian, never seen nothing. Actually never heard any of these stories from old timers. And I've heard plenty of their stories! But I have heard stories of a runaway slave living in a cave on the Brushy mountian side. He was supposedly a bootlegger and lived there with two white women, some people found out about the white women and went to run him off but couldn't find him. He was said to have hidden his money and loot in a cave, and threw the two women off a cliff to keep them from telling his whereabouts. Mamaw even named one of the women and said that her Daddy looked for the man, but every place does have their stories so who knows. Interesting stories above but like I said I lived there my whole life and so has my family, we've never heard the above stories.
