Are you talking about Basil Collins that use to be Mine Superintendent at Highsplint back in the day?If so he Died many many moons ago.

I felt bad when I heard that the real person passed away.

I guess I never heard of a name like Basil ever in my life, and thought someone was goofing off.

That was something to watch.

I'm so thankful for what I got to do for a living compared to those men, and maybe women to that have to work in those horrible, dangerous mines every day.

I honestly don't know how they do it knowing one day the black lung is going to get them, and the work will turn a young man old very quickly.

I respect their hard work, but I don't know how they can stand it.

Thanks for sharing this. It is an eye opener.

Basil was in the documentary Harlan County USA...

also walked the Bataan Death March WW2. A war HERO.

A VERY fine MAN...

He passed in 80's from cancer...

Thanks for info I had heard he was a Survivor of the Bataan March we had just seen Harlan County USA have lived in WV coal fields all my life we have 3 sons one a UMWA Local Officer ,the other a Superintendent of a Coal Co., the other somewhere in between this makes our cookouts interesting from time to time . Like our family everyone
knew they were right

yeah basil, my uncle worked for him during the big strike in the 70's, yeah he didn't play no games but back in the day what else could you do? This is way back people. yeah i saw the video harlan co. u.s.a., really good documentary, i was a mere sprout when that stuff happened, so the movie was a real eye opener.

the tell me that when he was a prisoner of war that they pulled his fingernails and toe nails off and he had none, he had a hardness to him but would you not if you had been thru and seen what he had.

My dad was friends with him during the coal stike and he has always spoke very highly of him. Told me stories about Basil carrying his friend on his back for miles during that death march because he could't leave him behind. What happened to the men like him?
