I am sick of seeing all these coal mining wives on Facebook ranting because their husbands have been cut 8 hours off their weeks. They say they are thankful for their hubby's having jobs, but yet everyday they post a new status towards Alpha. The first thing you need to understand is a thing called clean coal. Kentucky Utilities are switching their plants from coal to natural gas, which means that coal no longer has the value that it once had. Coal companies do not want to switch to clean coal, so KU really has no option.(Though I do support coal over gas) When you go into the mines you have to realize that is a job that can go at ANYTIME. So many mines' are laying off and cutting down because they want bigger profits. When you married your husband, bought that new truck and that new house you should have realized, mining will not always be around. Wives' are complaining on Facebook(which Alpha is paying the bill for the internet and probably the computer) about their husbands' are gonna quit, please realize there are several other unemployed miners out there ready to take the jobs and be thankful for the 32 hours a week. So please stop b!tching on Facebook!

Since when is it ridiculous to have a house payment and one vehicle payment? That's what we have and we're gonna be struggling to make ends meet. Overtime was cut, and now the extra hours. This is gonna be an approximate $400 pay cut on the week! That will be a struggle for everyone unless you still live at home with your parents! Cut the people some slack! GEEEZZZE!

I don't mind to sacrifice. Sitting down with the wife and kids this evening and figure out what can be eliminated. Satellite will be the first to go. It's still going to be rough though. Unemployment will not cover most people's bills. And 32 hrs. won't either. Everyone is scared! I just don't think criticizing them is the right thing to do.

If what you said is true then why aint all the other minning companies in the area laying off and cutting their workers hours. And you KU doesn't buy coal from this area all of Ky's coal goes to steel mills and shipped to savannh Ga were it is shipped to china they buy it off us because its cheaper then minning it themselves. The problem with alpha is they are too big of a company and the price of coal has dropped alittle this month and there loosing money it has nothing to do with electricity. When KU switches its plants to gas it'll be the consumer that pays for that you better believe it. You know if 10 or 15 guys would quit and go somewhere else and get a job they would increase workers hours to compensate for the lack of employees. So if any of you work for alpha and ain't happy quit and help your buddies out go to lone mountain or Seqoya I guess thats how its spelled any way you would be helping your buddies out plus lone mountain has alot better benefits and pay scale and safety standards not to mention there a stable and prosperous company.

Alpha has only made it to where the men get 40 hours a week with no over time. I can only hope they don't lay off or shut down a few mines because alot of people will be hurt by that.

Why would anyone live on overtime. And why would you have more bills than one person working in the home could handle. You never know what tomorrow will bring and you might be on your own having all of the bills to pay. I am very thankful that at my house we never had more bills than one of us could pay.

Alpha lost a 3 million ton contract threw a power company, Alpha will not sale coal on spot market. They will wait until a big contract before they actually mine the coal. Alpha said in the beginning there goal was to reach the largest coal (reserve) in the world. They didn't say anything about production. They told us in the beginning that if the price of coal drops they would do whatever it takes to stay alive. A large corp. like that could care less about the individual all they care about is there big numbers. There company was founded in 2002, how many company do u know that grows to over 14000 employees in less than 10 yrs has any other goal than money and not people. As far as pay cuts there not going to lay people off because it would cost to must to idle a mines and re fire than to just cut hours. Again its all numbers. They said company was going 4 days a week, 8 hours a day probably until the next quarter.

People WV and Pennsylvania are the states that supply the power companies Ky and Virginas coal is metalergical that means they only use it to make steel because of its Low sulfer and high carbon, Anyways if alpha is going to be one of thosse companies then the county needs to pull there permits and starve them outts the county alpha would be forced to lease it to a company that will work and produce or like that one guy said if the men would strike for a week or two that would force a hike in production. They should of striked when they cut there pay. All these miners need to take a example from ARH nurses. If i was working for alpha and they cut my pay and hours then I would get a job with LONE MOUNTAIN Now thats a good company that cares about there work force unlike alpha they say there the biggest but what does that matter if they don't value there employees and there family's its not right. But only the miners can change it those men have the guts to crawl under a mountain they need to find the balls to stand up to the MAn and not take any shit from them hell they can't rehire enought minners to replace those that strike hell if those boys walked off the hill tomarrow they wouldn't have to worry about scabs hell were in harlan we make these companies do what we want not the other way around if they strike there wouldn't be anybody try to scab those boys jobs but really somebody needs to call the UNITED MINE WORKERS UNION AND GET ORGANISED, those boys done alot better when there company was privately owned and it can be that way again all they have to do is take that step and the rest will follow. Alpha Employees you need to think about it don't wait for them to say they'll try and make it better take matters into your own hands and it will work. If not then I'm sure we've got enough county connections to make it hard as hell for them to make it here. Its our coal and our mountains not theres and we can take it from them.

we have four kids to take care of.. the mines are the only thing that allow us to stay in harlan and be close to our family.. there really isn't anything that brings in enough income without welfare here.. we don't want welfare.. but we would like to make enough to do more than get by.. we don't have new cars. we do own our home, and access to the internet, but we don't worry about having the best as a must.. we worry about staying in harlan where we can be close to our families.. that's my only concern.. the mines are moving them down to 4 days a week now.. and its worrying us families about making ends meet.. not new cars... well.. us real coal miner wives that support our loves.. not use them.. lets just hope and pray they live another day and don't get black lung and find better jobs if it comes to that.. jobs that are not so harsh on the miners bodies and dangous to their very being..
