i am sick of hearing everybody talk about about how they like to see coal miners getting laid off, and about how they spend there money. The truth is that you are all jealous. Not of my brand new silverado, not of my 200k home. well maybe your a little jealous of those things. But what you all are really jealous of is the way your wives look at us. yes thats right every time i stop at a red light, go through a drive through, or go to wal-mart. there is a bunch of married women trying to pick up a coal miner. So when you are thinking about how jealous you are of us. Just KNOW that at any time any one of us could be at your house pouring the coal to your wife. HA HA HA

No one I know would ever be jealous of an uneducated overpaid under-worked stripe wearing dope head.
At any time you could be on welfare. Its a coming big talker. And its a coming soon. So wear those stupid looking stripes everywhere you go while you can. Your about one step above a ditch digger, if that. BTW What do you think your woman does all day while you're at work? HA HA HA

Don't pay attention to the loser trolls, most of them are monthly check recipients that are funded by tax dollars or the KFTC. LOL

Most coal miners are idiots. They are uneducated, or at least act as though they are, redneck, trash, uncouth, and arrogant bunch of people. They have no respect for anything or anyone but themselves. I am not saying that all of them are like that, but the majority of them fit the discription. Coal is dying. RIP Coal 2013

That sad part about it is, they obviously have no clue what would happen to Harlan if they were no coal mining no more. All business's in Harlan make there money off from coal miners. Without coal everyone will suffer.

my house is on airport road, and there are several 200k plus homes in harlan. I just laugh at you stupid people who go to college and pay on 75k plus college loans and still dont make half of my salary. so just keep setting in your double wide that you cant afford being jealous of the REAL MEN.

Coal Keeps the Lights On!!! Not for long! Soon it will be clean energy with less pollution. HaHaHa!!

You may have a 200k home and a new Silverado, but those things will be repo'd when the Coal Mines is gone. Sucks to be you.

I disagree with this statement. Nurses and anyone in the medical field for that matter make just as much if not more than a coal miner. Go to school and get an education. At least then, you would have something to fall back on.

It's sad to see so many miners and their families are completely clueless about the reality of our energy situation as a country, as well as the world at large. It's easy to point a finger and blame Obama for the slowing down of coal, but he's just a scapegoat; he doesn't have anything to do with it. All he does is sign the laws, he doesn't make them. He could veto, but he understands the energy trend so he won't do it. Despite what some posters on here claim, you know who I'm referring to, western ky coal is struggling and so is western US coal. It's not isolated in Appalachia, in fact, there are a few reasons why coal mining has slowed in the mountains and regulations aren't the biggest reason. The share of electricity derived from coal is at a 60 year low, and it's only going to get smaller; and yet, MY LIGHTS ARE STILL ON!!! Tell me again how that stupid slogan and every other one isn't propaganda? I wonder how many mines in Harlan right now are getting close to expired contracts? Maybe they have new ones, or high hopes of renewals? I think deep down coal miners know their way of life is on its last leg, but talking tough is part of their modus operandi. They want people to be jealous of them, but who in their right mind is? Who wants a job that will either kill you quickly or drag death out over several decades? Sure, it pays ok, but at what cost? Most couldn't care less how they spend their money, but it's easy to see from the outside looking in that spending furiously is both unwise and unsustainable, at some point debt will catch up. Especially when the primary source of income comes from such a fluctuating industry. It's always up and down, and let's not forget, accidents do happen. I don't know of anybody with a 4 year degree that has 75K in student loan debt. Maybe an Ivy League alum? The average is about 20K-25K, which is still a lot for school but it comes back in time, like any good investment. The untrue stereotype is that college kids are all spoiled, rich brats that get school paid for by parents. At the current cost of tuition, only very rich people can afford that; most people work their way through college with PT or FT jobs, work study, scholarships, and loans. Coming from someone who has worked in the mines(briefly) and is now working through college, I can honestly say coal mining is easier, but more rewarding in the short term. Oh, how I miss that paycheck, but i don't miss the dusty conditions and the looming possibility of death around every break. College is more difficult, but pays off in the long term. College is a lot of fun sometimes, but a real pain in the a$$ most of the time. It's not easy finding time to work 40 hours a week, while taking a full course load, and having to keep up with bills with what little money you can scrape up. Then there's homework that consumes what few hours of "free time" you have during the week. No wonder we love adderall so much lol.

Aren't there several in Harlan county who receive checks from welfare and SS? I don't think the town would lose much business if the mines laid off. Did ppl not listen to the sound financial advice that was on tv and radio in 08'? Put enough back into savings to pay your bills for 6 months in case of job loss. Remember when the US was doing well with it's steel industry during WW2. The war ended and demand fell. Those workers had to change their jobs. This is no different. Just seems the coal miner's want to blame someone instead of accepting change and preparing for it. The world is depending more on oil and clean energy. People care about their health and the environment. Sadly, this is why the coal mines are failing. China was importing maşsive amounts of coal fom the US, they are changing to clean energy which in turn is causing less demand for US coal. Coal miners and your wives need to prepare. Get some classes going and retrained for something that will be in demand. Online classes are good for those working. My husband worked in the mines for 10 years and 3 of his brothers worked for 30 some years. We just buried 1 of them a month ago. Black lung is a horrific disease and seeing him suffer was unreal. One of the other's has bl and is now very sick. Drs can't diagnose him. If they'd worked in a healthy breathing environment, he'd still be here and they would both be healthy and enjoying their grand children. I don't hate or wish anyone to lose their livelihood. IMO

no my home truck, and boat wont be repod, because they are paid for. You see coal miners actually make enough money to pay stuff offf in aresonable amount of time. we dont need 30 year home loans, and 72 month zero money down car loans. All my things belong to me. Lets not forget how this topic all started. It was about jealousy. Because the people who get on here and run there mouth are all jealous of coal miners. and of course guest lets not forget your sweet wife.

No one is jealous, get over yourself. You WANT people to be jealous of you, but in reality no one wants your future, dude. My advice is enjoy your toys while your lungs and back still allow you.
