Fort Hood played an integral part in the Vietnam War by training soldiers for deployment. A village was built on post to simulate the Vietnamese countryside.
In May 1970, the “First Team” was “First into Cambodia.” The division's Vietnam service ended in 1972 when its last brigade began withdrawing. The 1st Cav. was the first division to go, and the last to leave.
The 1st Cavalry Division was transferred to Fort Hood following the Vietnam War.
