Mexico president says U.S. should not close its doors to migrants

There are 13 comments on the www.nctimes.com story from Feb 13, 2008, titled Mexico president says U.S. should not close its doors to migrants. In it, www.nctimes.com reports that:

Mexican President Felipe Calderon on Wednesday acknowledged tensions between the U.S. and Mexico over illegal immigration, but stressed that both countries have an interest in ensuring their citizens can cross the border legally and safely.

Addressing a joint session of the California Legislature, Calderon said the economies of the two countries are interdependent. For that reason, there must be "shared responsibility" for immigration on both sides of the border.

I don't disagree with Mexicans coming over the bordor to work, but it ends there. They should NOT be in our welfare system, our health care system, our school system or any other system. They should work and go back home.
Mexico needs to fix their own country. There is such wealth there but the corrupt government is to blame for the condition of that country

I'm tired of mexicans telling Americans how we're supposed to take care of their problems for them because they don't want to. Mexico has hated us since 1847, when we defeated them in the American/Mexican war. We whipped them royally, and then we paid them $15 million+, and still they cry and demand, and call all us gringos "racist."

This land is ours. We fought for it, we bled for it, we paid for it. It's ours. Topix doesn't like the use of obscenities in their forums, and I don't blame them; but damn it, I'm enraged. I say, "Fuck Mexico."

Arrest and jail the AMERICAN employers who hire undocumented workers! When was the last time you heard of that happening? If you want people to stop coming, get rid of the jobs.
But ALSO, be honest, and be ready to pay $5 per avocado,$20 for a bag of oranges, etc. Are you ready to do that? If so, go after the employers. If the jobs disappear, so will the undocumented workers; they are not stupid. I love to hear my fellow red-blooded Americans whine about "illegals," but really, what would we do without them? Face it, our prices are as low as they are because our govt. turns a blind eye to the practice of hiring these workers. Why does it do this? Because it makes business sense. President Bush knows this. So do you. You can't have it both ways.
It would also be really nice if the US govt would pressure the Mexican govt to take care of its problems on their side of the border. There is no reason for the status quo to change in Mexico when all the socio-economic problems have an escape route/safety valve called the border with the US. There is incredible wealth in Mexico. For years, until quite recently, Mexico had the 2nd highest # of millionaires in the world...next to US! Their rich are very, very rich. They have no incentive to do what's necessary to share that wealth, build their country, or stop the flow of their people to our country. This has got to stop.
There will be no change until the US is no longer more attractive than home. We will not cease to be attractive until the jobs dry up!
Personally, I am ready to eat avocados sparingly. Mexican people should not have to give up their homes and culture just for a chance to survive when they come from a nation as wealthy as theirs. Their (rich) government should be ashamed!

Actually, I AM a public high school history teacher. Please don't paint us all with the same brush.

I am a big fan of teaching as many of the "facts" as I am aware of and letting the students decide for themselves. Who am I to interpret things for them? I work hard to familiarize them with various interpretations without overwhelming them with my own. It IS possible!

I am proud of not having a single complaint from a kid or parent in 17 years that anyone or his/her views were excluded or unwelcome. I really enjoy my work in the classroom! It takes great skill and care to create a space where all view points are welcome. Many students bring their parents to class and all parents are welcome to drop in at any time unannounced. It is very AMERICAN to discuss and debate our views. I love it!

You and BloodyVisigoth seem to have really different viewpoints on this topic. Sometimes it's best to just agree to disagree. I don't think either of you is going to convince the other at this point. Perhaps you've both done something by just getting your thoughts out there. You both have certainly given me food for thought and I appreciate your comments!

thank you.your words were like music, nice to hear.History was'nt my best subject back in school but now i see how very very important history really is.I would have been more of a rebel....good or bad.history is the finger print of how america became, "good or bad" history is the truth.
the only statement i can make is americans need to do the right think and help a fellow american during these hard time, and at the right time cleaning house in america can happen in a nicer way.I too appreciate your comments .

Just keep on living in denial. That's what mexican racists do when they're confronted with facts.

Who the hell was talking about Hawaii? I mentioned the American Mexican War.

Fact: The United States won.

Fact: We had Marines as far south as Mexico City; and as I stated before, if Americans were the white devils you want to believe we are, we would have kept it. Personally, I believe it was a mistake to give it back, but the US government took pity on you.

Fact: The United States paid an additional fifteen million dollars to the government of mexico (I refuse to dignify that sewer of a country by capitallizing its name).

If "Dear Zorro" truly is a history teacher, as he or she claims to be, then he or she will back me up on this.

If you're such an America hater, as you clearly demonstrate that you are, then feel free to leave--and don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out.
