SUN ISLAND RESORT
1631 Harbison Canyon Road

May 23, 2008

We are saddened to inform you that Sun Island Resort is closed effective this date. After over fifty years of being a nudist resort formally known as Swallows Sun Island Club it has become necessary to take this drastic step as a result of recent events beyond our control.
For those of you reading this message that are still active members we will be prorating your membership fees and refunding the remaining fees to you. This should occur sometime in the month of June 2008.
The management of Jim and Ruth Shafer wish to thank all of you have been so faithful to Sue Latimer, the former owner and matriarch of Swallows, the Swallows Club and to us during our fourteen plus years as owners.
(More will be revealed soon about the upcoming changes to this resort...)

I am wondering what the name of the new resort opening there will be??? My guess is that it will be "We Swallow Swinger's Resort Of Harbinson Canyon"

I can't believe that intelligent resort members did not see this coming. Recent events were under and accomplished under the control of J&R Schafer.

Do the Harbinson Canyon residences know the true facts about what has been and will be happening right under their noses??? The leaders/management have been shifting policies toward becoming a swinger's resort for a very long time. Most of the former members saw this coming and did not renew their membership because of the undercurrent of Swinger activity going on there. I am sad to say that I was not one of those... Instead myself and a few other fought this because we didn't want this to happen. At least three employees were fired because they objected to what was happening. Now they blame the honest members for the current conditions of the resort. What a load of Bull C**p. The very least I would demand, as a former Resort member and as a resident of Harbinson Canyon, is that the fence come down...

And the truth will set you free....

Sue Latimer would shoot Jim Shafer for what he has done.
Jim Shafer has swindled all. Most recently a property management company who is leasing or buying the newly named Harbison Canyon Estates. They have no idea how much this property has been neglected during the Jim Shafer ownership. He just let it go down the tubes milking it and any investor that would make a deal with him.
It is no longer a nudest club.
And as for the swinger comment well lets just say it never happened here any more than it happens in your neighborhood.

I got out about a year ago after hearing from J & C what plans they had for Sun Island, and after we were approached by a "nice new couple" who asked us how we liked to party. We answered "at Halloween," and they buzzed off. We couldn't run to the car fast enough and drive out the gate. Previously, we had talked about buying one of the (land-less) mobile homes. Whew we did not. Our accountant told us it would be a risky deal. Now that the beach is closed, we have reverted to wearing clothes and sending back our AANR and Naturist cards. We have met the enemies and they are liars and cheaters like the Shafers or swingers like the .......'s Innocent social nude recreation is going fast, but thanks for the years of enjoying it at Swallows...until "clothing optional," that is.

I am so sad to find out about this news today. I was raised in a nudist family who did not partake in anything other than wholesome fun and relaxation. My family went to Swallows and played tennis, water volleyball, playing cards in the Roost or poolside, relaxing and swimming for hours of the day, occasional Karaoke, games of pool for a quarter, ping pong, hiking around the grounds and up the path on the hill behind, socializing, reading... it was a luxurious vacation spot for a family with young children. We loved the friendly attitude especially toward families (compared with other clubs) and we loved the community kitchen. The fact that we could pack up the groceries for the week and pretty much prepare all of our meals right there made vacationing affordable. I started visiting Swallows at approximately age 7.(I am now 34.) I ran around naked for that week each summer catching polly-wogs in the stream and playing with the other children who were visiting or growing up there. I would play with the statue of a woman between the roost and the pool when we were near the same height. I remember when there was a deep end in the pool and we took turns jumping from the diving board. I remember Big Sue and her pug dog MACHO (and later her pug dog MIKE) and I think of Swallows fondly in my memories of childhood. My family and extended family went down to Swallows every summer to camp for about a week-long vacation usually in August, and occasionally we would go over a weekend at another time during the year... mostly it was an annual event. Now it has been a few years since my last visit. I never was back after the fire a few years ago. Now I have a 2-year old daughter and a 3-year old son and they are not readily welcomed in some places like Glen Eden which (with so many strict and prohibitive rules) doesn't even let them inside the pool area. I am sad and disgusted to learn this fate of such a beautiful haven. Can it really be gone?:(

Swallows survived floods; it came back after the fire; greed did it in.

Barbara, it's gone.

I reflected good thoughts on your shared message of what great times you've had at Swallows. But then it quickly went down hill after the Schafer's took it over.

I spent many, many relaxing wonderful weekends there during gig Sue's tenure. And her cute little dog I too know of pretty well. I understand after Sue passed away and when the Schafer's took over ownership the little dog was no longer a welcomed to freely roam the grounds. It was booted out.

Swallows for me was an escape from the weirdness of San Diego's general population, but from what I myself had seen coming over the horizon and what the odd and the strange has moved into Swallows!

And now it is closed.

I wouldn't believe it if I didn't see it with my own eyes. What was once a nice family nudist resort is no more.

Very unfortunate. I had been there only a couple times when visiting San Diego over the last couple years. A fine place - activities, hikes, swimming, sunning. A great mix of people & families. We never saw any hint of the swinging element. It was a bit odd to go on the hike and be in full view of the newly constructed suburb over the hill, but thats what they get. Hopefully some other places/folks will take on the mantle.

Sounds like a lack of skill and interests maintaining a small club by its owners and members. In addition, there must have been growing pressure from the many non-nudists living around the club boundaries for the club owners. There are always risks owning real estate, and the real estate knowledge of the owner being most important for success. I would like to buy that property keeping it a nudist resort, but I know handling the politics would give me a lot of gray hairs. Finally, if the members put all of their
capital together they probably could have had a down payment to buy that land and be partial owners :-)

So goes another Icon. My wife Betsy and I were associate members, back in the late '60s, after our local club "Calyptus Grove" closed down near Fresno.(we were stationed at NAS Lemoore)I can remember the "rabbit alarm", used when intruders were spotted on the hill, and members would throw on pants and circle the hill to capture them. Teenage intruders were taken to the pool area, and their parents would have to come in and pick them up. People would come to the fence seperating Swallows from the "frontier land" park, and peek through the knotholes in the fence. Members would target them with squirt guns.

One year we were awakened on a Sunday morning by burros from the frontier land amusement park who had gone through the fence and were roaming the grounds, till the owners were located and could come and get them.

For members who are looking for a family-oriented park on the east coast, let me invite you to visit White Tail Resort, in south east Virginia.

Gone is a oaces in the hills of San Diego. I was uneasy at first being the only black man there, but I was quickly made to feel at home. there was some I know did not like me being there. but most became swallows resort friends. I was happy to take part in most of the activities at the resort, or just relax. I did notist the change slowly comming for some time. Maybe because I was not totally a part of swallows, and I could see the difference changes. It was a life style in the dark spaces of the resort. Wating for the time to show it self...

Ever since swallow is gone I feel lost. It does not compare to other clubs. I’ve been to Glen Eden it does not compare. Sure the place is nice, but its run by a bunch of old folks who make you feel unconfortable with a lot of rules. It like being at grandma’s house don’t this, don’t do that. A couple got in trouble for a pat on the tush. Theres more touching at a sports event. My God! I miss Swallows

Growing up in the harbison canyon area in the 60,s and 70,s we all heard of the daring feats of going up the mountain behind the nudist club to see see what we could see, always the boys and them always saying if you were caugh you would get in trouble. I now believe that they were taken into the grounds and their parents made to come and get them. I heave to email my lifetime friend aand let her know another one of our childhood merories is a thing of the past.

1968-1970: I met a life-long friend there. I took my girlfriend there, initially shocking to her, but she was very soon completely at home. Sue never changed, firm but friendly, like the rule for Naval Officers. "T" took off more than once up the hill, likewise firm but friendly with the rabbits.
Wonderful place, innocent like the times themselves as we look back on them now.

Oh get over it. Time to put your clothes on. No one wants to see those old flabby bods anyway! If ya do then you need help! By the way yes it was always a swingers place. Debate it all you want. I am sitting here with someone that has told me a tale or 2 of the the tail had by all out there. He makes no bones about his lifestyle. So trusted source tells all! Sinners! lol!!!!!!!!!!

To Norme bo whatever - you're an idiot. I grew up in this environment and the swinging types are fairly rare; however, we do have nurses, scientists, war heros, salesman, travel agents, fire fighters, legal secretaries, homemakers and families, basically your average American who happens to think being nude is a fun and perfectly natural way to be (because it is). This place is not all about flabby swingers and weirdos...trust me. Oh, and please stay in Vegas and keep your mouth shut. Thanks! SEE YA~

No nudest anymore, now manager Dave a drug user will sell or rent to anyone. Kleege is OK with drug use or growing marijuana and anything else, no rules except no nudes aloud. Criminal record OK, no problem, around $400.00 per month with no utilities.
Squatters OK sleep in one of Daves eight rooms in the old swingers club smoke a joint with him and he may let you use the laundry. And use any facilities that still work.
