It's intersting that the high Sherrif of the Billerica House of Correction has all sorts of SWAT teams and equipment including armored vehciles and the local cops don't call him for help during this nostage drama. What that says about the amout of money Sherrif DiPloa has wasted on heavy duty firepower, swat trucks and boats is that duiring times of a law enforcement emergency, the Sherrifs help is not needed or trusted.

One added comment; Billerica has an auxiliary police force who are armed with automatic glock sidearms, mace, batons and yet the only time I see them is directing traffic in front of some churches on a Sunday. whys all the firepower for these aux cops when they are not used during a hostage standoff, or the bomb threat at thehigh school? Can the Lowell Sun report on the purpose of this group of cop wannabes.

It was quiet a scare to see all the police outside the neigborhood houses last night. My dogs started barking and I looked out to the street and saw the SWAT team walking past. I searched the police blog on the sun website for information which I found! I thought the bangs were gunshots not gas grenades. I was happy to read in the Sun today that it all ended well.

You bring up some great questions. The Taxpayers keep throwing more and more money at law enforcement to fight crime. But, let's face it. They don't fight crime as much as they respond to crime after it has already happened. We spend all kinds of money on law enforcement and heavy arms; but most cops are enforcing motor vehicle offenses and nothing more..........

" though they had not yet determined last night if it was a rifle or BB gun."

Huh? If they couldn't determine within 10 seconds of laying eyes on it whether it was a BB gun or a rifle, then they shouldn't be cops!

The auxilary police pay for their own uniforms and weapons. They are a volunteer force who don't get paid. You would have to be trained at a police academy to deal with hostage situations etc. Since it is volunteer, many members are working other jobs.

I feel bad for her, obviously she has some mental health issues and for anyone that doesn't know what it's like to struggle with mental or emotional problems, you ought to count your blessings instead of making nasty remarks. Give the poor woman a break.

Too bad this world is full of people who sit back and make their own judgement of others. Especially when their "facts" come from a newspaper article. Do any of you know this woman? I knew her many years ago and back then she was a very nice person. I also know that she's had a lot happen in her life and believe she is still a nice person but has some issues. My heart goes out to her and her family. I hope she gets the help she needs and I hope she and her family NEVER read the rude comments that people who don't know all the facts leave on this post.

How could the police have prevented this crime ? Not all crimes are predicated. To think the police can predict all crimes is to live in a dream world. Maybe if more neighbors got involved and told police she was displaying strange behavior maybe someone could of kept an eye on her especially if she is living with elderly parents. Police do not have a crystal ball.

Good for you for standing up and stopping this bullying mentality! Your parents taught you well! Just remember what comes around goes around, and these bullies will get what they deserve in life, one way or another.
