Hi there,
I'm new to this site but I was wondering if anyone has sighted large wild cats over the years. I've, myself, sighted one years ago in a neighbors yard while waiting for a delivery truck early morning (7AM). If I'm correct, the year was 2000 and the cat was a shiny black with a long tall and it seemed to walk across their backyard in a "crouching" position as if it was stalking. I seriously wouldn't be surprised if they're were large cats in the area because I'm sure there are plenty of deer for a food source, rural areas( Great Cedar Swamp . Plus a water source for them to drink out of. But if anyone has has any sightings, experiences and vocalizations, please, post them. Thanks :)

My son saw something with that exact description yesterday! He said it came out of the woods in our backyard just for a few seconds. He said it wasn't huge but definitely was too big to be a housecat, too sturdy. Last summer there the kids were camping out back there and heard what sounded like a wild cat fighting with another animal. I've seen deer and turkeys back there, and I'd love to see this animal! We live in Manomet (South Plymouth).

in 1974 i was riding on a dirtbike trail, in Waterville Maine, the trail ended at the I-95 North exit on to Main St. the median strip was in clear site of the trail as it was about 30-50feet higher than the median strip, in the strip i first saw a large black tail twitching to and froe. i am a Registered Maine Guide with a master license.i know what i saw. a large black cat the size of a full grown cougar !!I was frightened and was a afraid that the cat would give chase to the bike, i switched off the engine and rolled the bike away and went home and got my rifle and my truck and went back, it was gone. i never told any wardens as i did not want them to think me nuts, and risk my license.it is now 38 years later and when i hear the storys on the History Channel, and some claim that there is me such things in Maine, Well i know better.....

Hi,

I think what you saw is called a Fisher Cat. My husband saw one last winter in ones of our trees. You Tube has some videos of them that you can look at to see if they look like what you saw.

My wife and I were camping with our children in the Myle Standish State forest in 1997. One night I walked my wife to the rest room in the center of the camp area, as I waited out side for her I saw a large black cat with a long tail walking towards me aprox. 25 yards away. My wife came out of the rest room and saw it as well. The large cat was looking at us and kept it's same stride. The strange thing is that the sight was full of campers with fires burning. We were in fear enough to sprint back to our camper. My wife and I know what we saw and it was with out a doubt a large black cat with a long tail walking calmly through the sight with out a care. We know what we saw and swear it was a black panther. I have researched large black cats in south eastern Ma.and can find no other sightings listed. This experience has stayed with us over the past 14 years. I would like to know if anyone has had a similar experience in the Myle Standish State forest.

I live in Burkesville Kentucky and had a good view of a large blck cat in mid Jan 2011. We had fresh snow on the ground and looked out the back porch window. My Mom said look at that black cat I did It looked to be sitting and looking around and then It decided to go behind the garage. I went out to have a look and when it saw me looking at it . It turned so fast and in about 3 leaps it was back at the edge of the woods we couldn't beleive it. It was 3ft+ and had a tail to match. I have put this on our local topix slowly people are responding .Its a great topic

I live in Bolivar Ohio. One night a yr ago, my husband got hm from work around 12:30 am. It was a summer night and he was standing outside in our driveway. We have a line of small woods behind our house, and he heard what he believes is a very large cat maulling something. It scared him enough to run inside and close the garage door. Not too long after that, our neighbor thought she small a "small black bear" in that same tree line. Wild life came out and told her that it wasn't likely a small bear as they would be with their mothers. Well fast forward to about a month ago. My husband found some interesting large tracks in the snow in our yard. We took a pic of it beside his size 11 boots, and it took up half his boot size.. Friends that we showed it to insisted it was a dog print. 2 weeks ago my 9 yr old daughter walked her friend hm two doors down.(7 pm still dark then) She called me afraid to walk back hm because they heard something growling and saw a "black bear". I stood in the driveway and told her I'd watch her come back hm. Then I heard it.. I've never heard anything like that around here. I jumped in my car and went and got her. Now I find out tonight that another neighbor also 2 wks ago came out at 2am. Heard something in our yard, looked over and saw a large black cat sprinting through my yard then up and jump over our entire street then up through the field across the street. Who do I call to come investigate. I'm am very afraid!

In most of the above scenarios, I would say it was a fisher cat... Yes, they are nasty.

I saw a large black cat with a long tail walking calmly through our back yard. It was a sunday mid march,2011. For 2 weeks prior we had a huge group of deer on the same path. It seemed the 15 to 20 deer were having trouble finding food through the ice and snow? The cat was black, muscular north of 60 pounds..maybe even 80 pounds plus. This was no Fisher Cat. My wife got a better look and said its a black panther...I can not disagree. I sure would like to know what it was. A number of neighbors have seen it too.

I grew up in Halifax, in the fifties and sixties. There was a wild animal farm there called the "Chase Wild Animal Farm" It's now the Halifax Country Club Golf Course. It was one of those walk-thru zoos in the forest, where the animals were barely restrained, and was finally shut down. The owner, a man name of Bob Belinda, released all the animals into the swamp, including big cats, birds, everything, before he was run out. Even elephants, alligators, monkeys, lions were in the swamps for years, and some undoubtedly cross-bred with local animals. After that time, we saw weird-looking birds like vultures, there were even yellow canaries that would attack other birds in swarms, and huge cats lived in the area after that. My father shot one huge cat by our barn, that was larger than a bobcat. We used to hear wild screams from the swamp in the summer, and Gawd knows what types of inbreeding went on. We had horses, goats and sheep that had to be watched closely becuse of the wild dog packs, and some of those that we killed resembled Hyenas. This can all be verified at the Halifax Town Hall. This is the area about a mile behind the King Supermarket on Plymouth street. You can start your own "Monsterquest," for real.

I saw a large cat cross in front of me on hwy 43, Kiln, MS. I thought it was a bob cat but it had a long tail. It also looked black but when it came into plain sight in the sunlight it looked an orangy red color. What could this be..

This morning I checked my trap by the chicken coop and there is a HUGE black and white cat in it. Now, in which yuppy neighborhood shall I drop him off? I'd like to think some liberal will want to take care of him, just like they do the micros and all the other bums. It's either that or the .22 caliber sleeping pill.

About a month ago, I was driving home on State Rd. in Manomet (Plymouth), Ma. Going south, I was about 1/2 mile before serious cycles. It was early in the morning, between 6-7 a.m. I had three of my children in the car with me. There was one car in front of me. Also there were a few cars coming the other direction. A clearly wild cat bolted across the street. It was black and not domesticated. It was kind of scrawny looking and had a long tail. It had a crouched stride. It was notably larger than a domesticated cat, but not as large as a mountain lion. Likely the size of a bob-cat, but most assuredly, not a bob-cat. My 5 year old son saw it as the person in front of me had to slam on their breaks, as did we and the driver coming the other way. I got a good look at it, but unfortunately I dont think I'll ever know what kind of cat it was. I wish so badly I could have spoken to the other drivers to hear their account of what they thought it was, or what species of cat, I guess. It was definitely a cat! And no, not a fisher cat either. We trapped a pestering one a few years back. And those mean little guys dont even look close to what ran across the street that day.

in may of 89 I was up 2 our camp on dundee pond in windham, me and several of the other kids up 4 memorial weekend took our bikes out down the long dirt cam rd, i was far ahead of the rest of the kids and desided 2 stop at the top of a small knoll, and on the other side, laying in the moist dirt at the bottom of this knoll was black mountain lion, he was shiny jet black, beautiful, sleek, the tip of his long thick tail was flickng slowly up and down, I could c the black flies swarming his head making him flick his ears, i watced him about 30 or 40 seconds b4 the oter kids caught up 2 me, the mountain lion looked up at me, then in2 the woods stood up and walked in2 them, I may have only been 12 but I know what I saw!

I just saw a large black cat in the woods in agawam, I thought it may of been a puma but we don't have them it was stealthy though 40 lbs
All black ears were trimmed back
When I saw it I ran it brought chills down my back looked just like a puma or mountain lion very similar but of coarse it wasn't those two at all
But very similar to them

That's awesome!! I know they're out there, wild cats of all kinds. Perhaps the black cat you saw, much like the one I saw, was a melanistic version of mountain lion. Who knows? But They're out there more than wildlife experts are willing to confirm. I just hope in my lifetime they will officially announce their resurgence to these areas they were once indigenous to.

Driving to afriends house one night in Manomet about 8:30 pm, I saw the dark outline of cat -shaped animal that was definitely looking to cross the road and gauging traffic. It had red eyes and I slowed way down just as it sprinted to the other side. I've seen bobcat, mountain lion and coyote and I know my animals, have no idea what this was -stood a good 2.5 - 3 feet at the shoulder.
