This is proof of how uneducated sheepish Americans have been brainwashed by the twisted liberal indocrination of political correctness. So silly, I think more white people were offended by this than black folks. A flag can mean anything you want it to mean, its all about a persons interpretation. Taking away someones heritage because someone told you that it's supposed to be offensive is actually fascist and oppresive. So Jews should not display their nations flag because a Muslim might be offended down the street?

The (Stars and Bars) was not even the real confederate flag of the war to be factual. Stop worrying about what a bunch of highly uneducated hypocrtiical peace nazi's tell you what you should accept or not.

As for the "hillbilly" and "redneck" comments posted here. That makes YOU just as much of an idiot as the so called "rednecks" you condescend to for displaying a flag you know nothing about, you're no better. Thought you were supposed to be "liberal", tolerant and understanding? Take a college level history course at your local community college before you run your mouth and sound even dumber.

Well, guess what kiddies. I'm going to fly my Confederate Flag whenever and wherever I want and if someone gets offended - too bad. I can't control whatever lies that have been put into YOUR head, or taught to you in YOUR school. It is a part of MY history and VIRGINIA history. It is NEVER going away, no matter how much childish whining and moaning you blacks do because it "reminds you of slavery". What about the so-called slave museum? What about the recent endless monuments (paid for by MY tax money) to your slave heroes? I guess they don't remind you of slavery, even though they have the words "slave" or "slavery" in their names. You want to stop racism? Stop crying "racism" every time you don't agree with something some white says or does. You are the racists!! You WANT to keep racism alive so that you can continue to be the "victim" - as if YOU were the slaves. Let me remind you that there have been no slaves here for at least 145 years. After all that time a vast majority of you STILL don't know how to dress yourselves, don't know how to act like a civilized human in public and you STILL can't say the simple 3-letter word, "ASK".

I don't understand the fuss or surprise here. Its Hanover County Va, the Tomato Festival. What kind of flags do you EXPECT to be handed out - Tomato flags??? Look, if this was an event in downtown Philly or even San Francisco well yeah, I'd be a little shocked that Confederate flags are being handed out. But its the heart of Virginia; you're going to see Confederate flags from time to time. Big deal.

"Many" were offended?!? Care to quantify that, beyond the two or three peopel wuoted in this story?!?!

This sort of sloppiness is all too typical in journalism today. Reporters throw aroudn words like "many" and "some"to suggest pluralities where they don't exist.

Can the "reporter" support that claim? How many people can she name who were offended? Can she even QUANTIFY the number of supposedly-offended people, or did Catie simply find one or two people with an agenda and inflate them to make a good story.

How about the "many" people who SUPPORTED the group? How come the masses of people who took the flags and stickers didn't merit that adjective?(Could it be because it would suggest that they were in the majority??)

This is yet another phoney controversy. The Ruffin SCV Camp has been at the Tomato Festival EVERY YEAR, with the same booth, handing out the same flags and stickers.

Apparently Catie didn't learn in her mass communications class that somethign isn't true just because a self-proclaimed "minority advocate" owns a fax machine.

Shame on WTVR! How about truth in advertising?

The headline should read: "One guy with an agenda bitches about flag."

That's his right. It may even be news. But don't take one person's opinion and extrapolate that to represent "many" people.

That's not journalism. That's bomb-throwing.

Your journalism is absolutely off base. Only one person was offended. Anyone that is offended is due to there lack of knowledge about the Civil War.

Amen, John Q Public!! I use an AXE to chop down a tree ...I ASK a question. And to all those who want to brag on the "first black president"...have you been following what he is doing to our country??? no, didn't think so..just vote for him cause he is black (actually a mulatto) & then take no further interest in the workings of democracy...like what you've done the rest of your government-dependent , hands-out-for- a-check lives. By the way, the "Stars & Bars" is the First National Flag of the Confederacy, not the Battle Flag, a common mistake. But just ask H.K. Edgerton about the Flag he carries...he is one of the finest black men in this country!! He would tell you about his heritage & his pride in the Confederate Battle Flag....just google him and prepare to learn.

I think the Confederate flag is beautiful! But the reporter hasn't quite got the correct name for the group handing out the flags. They are the Sons of Confederate Veterans! It is a wonderful organization! Neither the flag nor the Sons are a threat to anyone! You should feel far more threatened by people who talk on cell phones when they are driving!

Oh, Bob, you might be Irish, but you don't know what you're talking about! You should check to see how many Irish Confederates there were before you make statements like that! I am a proud Irish Confederate descendant! And there are multitudes of people around just like me!!!!! And we kick back!

The organization is the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
Get it right.
The SCV is an international organization with membership of about 35,000. It is a heritage group whose members are the descendants of Confederate soldiers. If you are male and have a Confederate ancestor, I urge you to locate a local camp (web search) and join. Learn about your heritage, the real history of these United States, what has happened to them, and your freedoms.

To the Irish guy - I happen to have Irish decent myself my ancestors who came into Richmond in the early 1800's and signed on with the Confederates to defend Virginia. I am proud of my heritage so don't talk about something you have no idea about. I didn't get a flag but think my freedom of speech is very important to me. How about all the free stuff from the different churches that's not offending anyone is it?

Evidently CBS needs some new ratings and sounds like to me you wanted the controversy. I doubt seriously if any one stayed away because they supposedly heard flags were going to be passed out and I doubt seriously if anyone really went home because they were being passed out. There were other booths that offended (like the political booths) but that didn't send me home, I just avoided it and I didn't see where CBS was making a big deal as to what political party was present and who it offended. YOU need to stop trying to make a mountain out of nothing. All this has done is made me make a decision not to support CBS any longer. And BTW- the rain sent me home.

If you don't have a dog in the fight, you should simply sit on the porch.
Dr. Edward C. Smith; Director of American History at American University in Washington, D.C. just happens to be a friend of mine: as well as an expert on the War Between the States. By the force of nature, he also is "African-American" (to be politically correct)
As a 40 year tenured Professor I doubt you would stand a chance in arguments, pro or con, about the Confederacy and her military & political leaders and the root cause of the last, best chance at maintaining the Constitution as envisioned by our Founding Fathers
Dr. Smith is not only a rabid supporter of Generals Lee & Jackson but also Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest ( of KKK fame)
I personally suggested a trip for him when he was speaking in Lexington, Va (home & burial site of Stonewall Jackson) to visit the 5th Ave. Presbyterian Church in Roanoke, Va. where a stained glass mural has existed for 100 years that honors none other than Stonewall Jackson. The church was founded in the 19th Century by former slaves and free blacks and the congregation saved their meager funds to build the mural led by Pastor L. L. Downing-an African American whose parents were taught Sunday school by General Jackson.
When you study the Confederacy without bias, like most European Nations, one will come away with a TRUE understanding at what the South was attempting to accomplish by succession-maintaining slavery was not in their Constitution: leaving that question and demise to each State to accomplish when circumstances to that end where within economic & social reach.
When Stonewall Jackson marched from Harpers Ferry to engage Federals at Sharpsburg, MD.(Antietam in the North)he marched with over 4,000 Black Confederates: some with cast off Union uniforms but all with dirks and rifles.
Every Confederate Veteran Camp organized after the War had Black members. The Federal Gov. was embarrassed at the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg when they had not made provisions for any Black Union soldiers , much less Black Confederates-first a trickle and then a flood of old Black Confederates began to arrive- Confederates made room in their tents for their Black Comrades in arms.
Heritage Not Hate, Sir! Is our motto!!!
