"It's heritage not hate boys! Ah, come on now little ladies, I didnt mean to leave you out of it either...y'all just go back to slatherin' them wonder slices with that mayo and get me that beer from my truck! Woo-hooo!"
Ok, Ok, nobody actually said that but that is what I thought of when I first attended the HTF--let me tell yo I was wrong! Like much of the county, the folks are very neighborly and thoughtful. But since the "sons" have come to the fest I think it casts a negative back-water perception across this fine county. Now, I know they have always been here along with some truly quieter but certainly more bigoted folks but the fact that they are now handing out confederate battle flags at events....?? Come on now, please fly it on your property, on your car, your license plate if you wish....but if you put it in my face again and then scowl when I refuse to take it----you may be flying it in a not so glorified spot next time!

This is a prime reason why Political Correctness has made this country so soft. I understand that some of our black brothers & sisters are offended by what the Confederate Flag represents to them, but it's part of OUR countries history good or bad, black and white. Maybe we should they should have handed out the British flag too, after all we had to fight the British here in Virginia gain all of our freedoms that we have today, both black & white! I'm pretty sure that no one finds that flag offensive black or white!

Thank you

Is this really newsworthy,or just the same old sensationalism? How many times does this flag subject have to come up?
To the ones offended...GET OVER IT! Don't LOOK for ways to be offended!Just ignore these fools and their flags. Some will wave it just to get the reaction out of you.Don't play their game!If someone offers you a confederate flag, just say no thanks and move on.
To the confederate flag wavers....GET OVER IT!The south lost, the war ended the best way it could have and our nation remained intact.I'm not saying be ashamed of what your ancestors did, just don't be so damn proud of it either!
I had ancestors that fought on both sides.I'm no more proud than I am ashamed of any of them.It happened,it's history, now can't we move on to another subject?

What's the big deal? If you don't want a flag don't take one.

I don't see what the confusion is all about. Anyone who has lived in Virginia for any length of time should already know that Virginians have a history of supporting losers. Just look at all the Redskin flags and stickers paraded around town. And don't get me started on the former Braves and the present Squirrel squad.
Pul-Leeze. people , get over the crap of the past and start building for the future. Just as there are still Hitler supporters today, there will always be supporters -of whatever- those who feel any identity with a given event. Probably most of them don't even know the "real" history of the war and the flag in the first place.
This state, nay, this country has gone from people who were proud just to be here to a bunch a grape-skinned whiners.
Confederate wannabees are just that, and anyone else that is soooo
sahnsative that they just cringe at the sight of a defunct piece of cloth need to take a get-real pill.

No offense intended but any "race" of people who are offended by that flag are IGNORANT! The meaning of the confederate flag is NOT and NEVER has been servitude. Stop being dumb UNEDUCATED americans and shut up!!

Interesting observation...
"After the Battle of Okinawa a Confederate flag was raised over Shuri Castle by a Marine from the self-styled "Rebel Company" (Company A of the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines). It was visible for miles and was taken down after three days on the orders of General Simon B. Buckner, Jr.(son of Confederate general Simon Buckner), who stated that it was inappropriate as "Americans from all over are involved in this battle". It was replaced with the flag of the United States. By the end of World War II, the use of the Confederate flag in the military was rare."

Now, why would it be inappropriate to hand out today?? Ignorance? Really?

"Minority advocate Rodney White says for many African-Americans the flag symbolizes servitude and repression and is hurtful."

They need to get over themselves.

I see alot of things that I don't like everyday. I work for a moron but I continue on with my day as if he doesn't exist. There are alot of things that go on in this world that I do not like. Ellen Degeneres on Idol- come on but I get over it. The media shoves homosexuality down everyone's throat but we watch the show anyway. If the flag upsets you then go the other way. If the guy tries to hand you a flag just tell him "no thanks". That is what I told the NAACP when they tried to hand me a pamphlet once.

Really? Seriously this made the news? I live in Hanover and enjoy the small town feel and love this County but I choose not to attend the "Redneck Fiestas" that include the crabfest, pig pickN, or any other gathering of Beer drinkin, truck drivin' rebel flag flyin', turkey shootin' individuals. That being said, PEOPLE HAVE RIGHTS! STOP trying to be so politically correct that you forget that. If you dont like it dont go or leave early. I should call the news the next time I have a car pull up with its music thumpin out vulgar lyrics with small kids all around. Doubt they would come out. Maybe I will just turn up Lynard Skynard.

I just want to point out that I have attended the Hanover Tomato Festival since i was in elementary school and it was in the athletic fields of Battlefield Elementary School and the Sons of the Confederate Soldiers has been there every year that i can remember. This isn't a new stand that has appeared suddenly to agitate the public. I am a prominent member of the Mechanicsville Community and I support the county's history. If you don't enjoy the stands (for which each person has paid) at the festival i suggest you not attend. Complaining about this stand is like saying we shouldn't let the republican and democratic party have a stand either, not everyone agrees with their opinions. Perhaps we shouldn't allow christians to hand out bibles on college campuses, i found that offensive but i KINDLY declined to accept one.

You dont have to agree with their opinion, you dont have to like their opinion but you do have to accept that they can have their own opinion and that they can voice it. The tomato festival is in Hanover because there is a good deal of farm land and the best tomatoes in the state grow here. BUT the families who have dedicated their lives to their land in this county embrace their heritage, if you dont agree, you dont have to go to Hanover to get tomatoes, you can try to enjoy Henrico tomatoes or City of Richmond tomatoes. But about those tomatoes in the city if you're not careful you may have to drive my the Stonewall Jackson Monument and you might get offended all over again.
