OK, HOW do you know the father didn't care properly for the son? Because he is monetarily succesful? That doesn't preclude being a good parent. And if the son is a drug addict, again that happens in many families, even ones that lavish attenion and love on the kids.
I sure hope all you prejudiced people aren't on a jury anytime soon. Most parents wouldn't want their kids in Cook County jail, esp. a white kid.

Innocent untl proven guilty, folks. This is the US, not China.

Mr. LeVin is so worried about his son's health in jail. Too bad he didn't teach his kid to worry about other peoples lives.

This is all a scam to get this rich guy off the hook for killing somebody with his Porsche, nothing new here, just money and lawyers getting someone off the hook, had the person been a poor guy with a buick or an el camino he will be in jail already
Right. Not playing a race card here, but this is a classic textbook case where if this had been a hispanic or black kid, he would have been tried and fried already.

smart commenter and right on!! the defense team is already tap dancing at the public's expense. The psych eval will be used later in court when he walks after killing two innocent people who just happened to get in his out of control path. i can see it now. he gets a couple of years of super with some pharm chem peddler who agrees to agree with the defense team of lawyers. this guy's parents are enablers plain and simple. if you think the shrink defense won't work just google jeanette sliwinski. she took out three innocents folks and is out on the streets today...all the justice money can buy...all imho of course

I 34-year-old man is by no strecch of the imagination a "kid."

If the guy is locked up in prison there seems like there would be many, many opportunities to get a sample of his DNA (from a cup or a fork or a Kleenex) without a court order.

OK, this is about as unsympathetic a character as you can find - but don't forget about this Constitutional bedrock called "the right to a speedy trial" -
the Cook County Jail system is an outrage, even if 90% of the people there are guilty, that's way too many innocent people spending way too much time locked up in a hellhole for something they didn't do.
or perhaps people here don't understand the concept of inno0cent until proven guilty.

His farther is worried about his son's health, that he could die in jail... I'd be more worried about pedestrians if his son gets set free. Like the two that he killed in Ft. Lauderdale. His father doesn't care about them, nor does he care about justice. He probably would care more if the tables were turned and it was his son that was killed.

Xavier; Lavin becomes LaVin; the son of a purveyor of truck stop trinket jewelry becomes a 'gem heir'. the blue collar stiff on the trash truck becomes a 'sanitary engineer'; Target becomes Tar-zhay; Madoff becomes Made-off, as in "I am Bernie, who made- off with your dough.". The parents didnt do the driving, but they killed that British couple as sure as the driver did. Mr Lavin's shortcomings were that at a man and a father, he was weak; he didnt have the guts to give his son an aXXkicking when he deserved it.

Well that is already history! He was released in 2006 after a similar chase in a similar car injured others including a police officer. That was in Chicago July 31, 2006. He was charged with 7 felonies (including cocaine possession) and eventually dealt his way into pleading guilty to only 1 charge: aggravated fleeing. Someone did let him out on probation, which he didn't even fulfil the terms of (hence he's in jail now), so yes, outrage follows now that two are dead and he still isn't charged.
