Even the playing field. Put good teachers in the urban schools (yes, that means we'll have to pay them). Provide employment and vocational training. Expand access to higher education drastically. That's how to start. Still have to do something about the overwhelming disparity among police treatment of minorities in cities and somehow expand our safety nets to ensure kids are worried about school instead of dinner. But the big fix will come when we stop incarcerating drug addicts and start getting them medical help. But people who know nothing about addiction don't like that plan, so it won't happen. Even if you show them how Europe ended their drug problems (check out Portugal's drug laws and rates of abuse - no laws, lowest rates of abuse), they still won't do anything.
Disparity in police treatment?.....But, blacks commit the highest percentage of VIOLENT CRIME???....Too much preferential treatment already, and taxpayers cannot afford to prop them up.......time for them to sink or swim.....

You do know that you have a much better chance of being killed by or killing a loved one when there is a gun in the house, than you do in stopping the boogieman don't you? I'm sure that most of you would soil yourselves right before you were killed (while failing to ever actually get your gun) if you ever had to exercise your so-called second amendment rights to protect yourselves. Remember, Freud (and others) would say that men try to compensate for short comings in other areas (you know what I mean) with guns! Justice Department reportedly blocked FBI probe over Reid, Lee accusations
March 14, 2014

The Justice Department reportedly has blocked the FBI from launching a federal probe into accusations involving Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, leaving agents to work with local prosecutors to examine the evidence on the side.

The Washington Times reported Friday that two local Utah prosecutors, one Democrat and one Republican, are now working on a wide-ranging corruption investigation. As part of that, they apparently uncovered accusations of wrongdoing by the two U.S. senators.

But the Justice Department reportedly blocked FBI agents from using a federal grand jury and subpoenas to test whether they or other officials committed any violations.

Both local prosecutors are speaking out, saying the claims should at least be looked into. Their offices are doing so, with some assistance from FBI agents.

I realize you're a democrat, but has Fox News invaded your psyche somehow? As a democrat, are you not required to grasp the entirety of a situation before making potentially offensive and incorrect statements?

Crime comes from poverty. To deny that is to deny reality. I am unaware of any intellectual that doesn't acknowledge this undeniable fact.

Disparity in police treatments? YES. And it truly could not be more obvious. The clearest example is almost laughable. Blacks and whites smoke pot at about the same rate (whites usually have a slight edge). But why are marijuana arrests occurring at THREE TIMES the rate within the black community than the white one (nevermind they are 1/6 the population). That's a disparity, and it isn't an isolated one.

Blacks commit the highest rate of violent crime? Not when you consider population living in poverty. It's not even close.

http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in...

Taxpayers are propping them up? Totally ridiculous. More taxpayer dollars go to the rich by a factor of four. Whites DOMINATE welfare rolls. Predominantly white, rural states (Alabama, Mississippi,. Kentucky) DESTROY those with high numbers of blacks in urban areas when it comes to people living on the dole.

The urban danger myth - White gunnuts will shoot you long before a black gangbanger. Sorry, it's just a fact. Cities are safer.

http://science.time.com/2013/07/23/in-town-ve...

Like I said, as long as we invest less in the urban, black communities but expect them to perform with the white ones we do invest in, we will be stuck in this ignorance. Until we acknowledge that they get the shitty schools, the shitty teachers, the shitty cops, the shitty job opportunities and the shitty housing opportunities, we will always get shitty results.

That isn't reverse racism. It isn't making excuses. It isn't preferential treatment. It's common sense.

New health insurance marketplaces signing up few uninsured Americans, two surveys find
March 6

The new health insurance marketplaces appear to be making little headway in signing up Americans who lack insurance, the Affordable Care Act’s central goal, according to a pair of new surveys.

Only one in 10 uninsured people who qualify for private plans through the new marketplaces enrolled as of last month, one of the surveys shows. The other found that about half of uninsured adults have looked for information on the online exchanges or planned to look.

We now have over 5 million people insured in this country that weren't insured before, I'd say Obamacare is working, by the end of March, 2014, totals could reach as high as 7 million.

Thanks Barack !

Despite what the critics say, Obamacare is work

Despite the treasured right-wing talking points, it’s increasingly clear that Obamacare is a success. Moreover, in places where Obamacare is not succeeding, it’s also clear that the right wing is to blame. Well, it’s clear to any who look at the state-by-state numbers of the newly insured. A whole lot of Americans will have to look, however, for the program’s success to redound to Democrats’ advantage.

Charles Gaba, an enterprising Web site designer, has taken it upon himself to track the number of Americans who have gained health insurance under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Tallying those who have signed up on the state and federal exchanges (2.1 million), those who have obtained Medicaid coverage (4.4 million) and those who gained coverage through the law’s requirement that private plans allow parents to cover their children up to age 26 (3.1 million), he cites more than 9 million newly insured through Obamacare.

Which is to say, the ACA is working as planned, perhaps a little better, in the states where governors and legislatures chose to implement it, such as California and New York. It is barely working in those states where governors and legislators have refused to implement it, such as Texas. Although the number of states declining any participation probably will diminish over time, as the tea party’s grip on the Republican Party wanes or as older white conservative voters die off, the resulting red-blue division between the states probably will be a feature of the nation’s political economy for some time.

Consider the implications: A larger share of Californians will be able to afford regular medical check-ups than Texans. A smaller share of Californians is likely to be bankrupted by the expense of major medical treatment than Texans. When the law’s tax penalties take effect, a smaller share of Californians will be subject to the penalties that come with the individual mandates than will Texans. In the coming years, a smaller share of California hospitals will face financial risk for indigent care than hospitals in Texas, where fewer of the sick and poor will be covered by Medicaid.

The conservative argument that the ACA is a disaster is true only when it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy: Most of the negative consequences that right-wingers have warned against have occurred only in those places where right-wingers have subverted implementation of the law. What supporters of the ACA must keep in mind, however, is that Americans who live in states where implementation has been stymied may continue to see the act as a failure and continue to blame President Obama and his party.

Park Service Knew World War II Veterans Would Be Locked Out
March 10, 2014
Internal e-mails reveal Interior feared being blamed, bent rules for its own staff.

The Department of the Interior knew beforehand that two groups of aging veterans would be visiting the World War II Memorial as the partial government shutdown began on Oct. 1 but decided to barricade the site anyway, according to e-mails obtained by National Review Online.

The newly released public records also show National Park Service employees busily monitoring the news for any bad publicity and making shutdown exceptions for their co-workers.

ObamaCare will hasten income inequality, union report says
March 10, 2014

A new report from a major U.S. union says ObamaCare will hasten income inequality.

Although it defends the intent behind the Affordable Care Act, the report, entitled “The Irony of ObamaCare: Making inequality worse,” concludes that the law will transfer a billion dollars in wealth to insurance companies, uneven the playing field in the market, force employers to cut back on hours and result in pay decreases, Ralston Reports said.
...
The document was put out by Unite Here, a hospitality industry union representing workers in the U.S. and Canada. The union of nearly 300,000 has been critical of the health law before.

The report says it’s “ironic” that the Obama administration is publicly discussing income inequality though it has yet to make the changes to ObamaCare that Unite Here believes are necessary to avoid exacerbating income disparity.
