Even Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), a darling of the movement, is going wobbly. First, she dropped her bid for a leadership position in the House when it became clear she wouldn’t win. Then she raised questions about the House GOP’s plan to ban “earmark” spending on pet projects. The woman who once maintained that “all this pork is bad” told Politico recently that there must be a way to funnel infrastructure money to her district.“This isn’t trying to be too cute by half of what is an earmark and what isn’t,” she said,“but we have to address the issue of how are we going to fund transportation projects across the country?”

Simple, congresswoman: The way you did before. In Washington, it’s business as usual.

This isn’t entirely surprising, and it’s a lesson that supporters of Barack Obama could’ve told the Tea party crowd all about. After campaigning on promises to change the way Washington does business, Barack Obama entered office and promptly began adopting the same old Washington tactics. Partly, it’s just a question of inertia; changing something as massive as the Federal Government is simply beyond the ability of one man, or one group of newly-elected Congressman. For one thing, there’s always more incumbents than there are new people. For another, the amount of work that is done by an unelected bureaucracy and Congressional staff makes it difficult for one Congressman to have much of a chance to really change anything.

"I have never asked for a single earmark, pork barrel project for my state of Arizona."
John McCain on Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 in Tampa, Fla.

It's just not true. As PolitiFact writer John Frank pointed out earlier this year, McCain in 2006 co-sponsored legislation that asked for $10-million for an academic center at the University of Arizona to honor the late Supreme Court chief justice William Rehnquist. In 2003, Frank noted, McCain won authorization to buy property to create a buffer zone around Luke Air Force Base in Arizona, and in 1992, McCain asked the Environmental Protection Agency to provide $5-million toward a wastewater project in Nogales, Ariz.

Of the roughly 15 percent of Americans who don’t have health insurance, "half of them made more than $50,000 a year."
Rand Paul on Monday, August 12th, 2013 in an interview on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show"

Paul said that of the roughly 15 percent of Americans who don’t have health insurance, "half of them made more than $50,000 a year." In reality, if you measure what individuals make, Census data shows that 28 percent of uninsured Americans earn $50,000. By another measure, using household income, almost 38 percent of uninsured Americans earn at least $50,000. Both of these figures are pretty far from the 50 percent Paul cited in the interview. We rate his claim False.

"The problem with raising tax rates on the wealthiest Americans is that more than half of them are small business owners."
John Boehner on Friday, November 9th, 2012 in a news conference

And it’s incorrect to call small business owners and millionaires who would see a tax increase one and the same. For top earners who report business income, it is often just a fraction of their total income. They are not the folks operating small manufacturing plants or neighborhood pizza parlors. In fact, only 0.5 percent of small businesses make that kind of money.

More often, small businesses are small in every sense -- most have incomes of less than $50,000 and almost all have profits of less than $1 million -- and they wouldn’t be affected by the millionaires tax.

Boehner’s statement is not accurate. On the Truth-O-Meter, his claim rates False

When the Republican Party collapses who will replace them?????

You Won’t Believe This Surfer Living the Food Stamps Dream

This is Jason Greenslate’s typical day:“Wake up, go down to the beach, hang out with my friends, hit on some chicks, start drinking.” He also plays in a rock band. And he’s living off food stamps.
He has no income—he’s not interested in getting a job—and he’s eating on your tax dime:$200 a month of “free money,” as he puts.“All paid for by our wonderful tax dollars.” He stays with friends, family members, or girlfriends.“Why not?” he asks. He says he is “living the dream.”
Today, there are roughly 47 million Americans receiving food stamps. About 4 million of these individuals are “able-bodied adults without dependents.”... Between 2008 and 2010, the number of able-bodied adults on food stamps doubled from approximately 2 million to 4 million.

"At an appearance at a Holiday Inn in Memphis, Rep Fincher said:

The role of citizens, of Christians, of humanity is to take care of each other, but not for Washington to steal from those in the country and give to others in the country.

In essence, Rep. Fincher doubled down on comments he made during the House Agriculture Committee’s debate over cutting funding for SNAP. Fincher said then:

We are all here on this committee making decisions about other people’s money. We have to remember there is not a big printing press in Washington that continually prints money over and over. This is other people’s money that Washington is appropriating and spending.

USDA data collected in EWG’s 2013 farm subsidy database update -- going live tomorrow --shows that Fincher collected a staggering $3.48 million in “our” money from 1999 to 2012. In 2012 alone, the congressman was cut a government check for a $70,000 direct payment. Direct payments are issued automatically, regardless of need, and go predominantly to the largest, most profitable farm operations in the country.

Fincher’s $70,000 farm subsidy haul in 2012 dwarfs the average 2012 SNAP benefit in Tennessee of $1,586.40, and it is nearly double of Tennessee’s median household income. After voting to cut SNAP by more than $20 billion, Fincher joined his colleagues to support a proposal to expand crop insurance subsidies by $9 billion over the next 10 years.

Keep in mind that while SNAP benefits are restricted to families whose income is below specified limits, crop insurance subsidies have no such limitations. Some farmers annually receive more than $1 million each in premium support, and more than 10,000 annually collect more than $100,000 each in insurance subsidies. A typical family getting by on SNAP benefits can scarcely even imagine numbers like that."

"After three and a half years of legislative hostage-taking and policy nihilism and unceasing, uncompromising obstructionism of President Obama's agenda, the message from the Tea Party is a simple one: we want more crazy.

So what's going on here? Quite simply, Republicans are being destroyed by the rightwing monster they created.

Although, once upon a time, the divide in the GOP was between moderates and conservatives; today, the intra-party cleavage is between the Republican establishment and the lunatic fringe. And the fringe is not so fringe-y.

For years, the GOP establishment mined this wellspring of racial and economic anxiety. They railed against gay marriage and abortion; attacked big government and out-of-control federal spending and demonized welfare and social programs.

But once in office, Republicans had a funny way of never really carrying through with their tough rhetoric. Rather than do away with social security or Medicare – they strengthened it and expanded it. Rather than slash government spending or the size of the federal bureaucracy – they increased it. The more visceral imperative for Republican officeholders was to provide tax breaks for their wealthy supporters, weaken regulation (be it financial, environmental or workplace) and, above all, hold on to their political power."

"The result of all this is more dysfunction, more budgetary shutdowns and more political black eyes for a Republican party unable to reason with its most ideologically fervent followers. None of this should really be unexpected. If you're going to tell radical conservatives that Obamacare is the worst thing to ever happen to America, is it really a surprise that those same extremists are not going to meekly nod when you tell them that it's now a fact of life? If you're going to tell voters that government debt is destroying the country, is it really a surprise when those voters demand that every step must be taken to reduce it?

Any hope that the defeat of Mitt Romney in November 2012 would begin to drain the GOP's fever swamp has gone by the wayside – and Republicans have no one to blame but themselves. In nurturing and radicalizing its extremist fringe – in pursuit of short-term gain – the Republican establishment created a political Frankenstein. Increasingly, however, it looks as though the monster's first victim is going to be them."

Summertime Blues: Polls show ObamaCare support eroding amid roll-out problems

As problems continue to pile up over the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, summertime polls from Fox News, Gallup and Rasmussen signal that growing confusion over the complexities of the law, how it will be rolled out and how much it will cost is eroding public support.
A majority of Americans say they believe the new health care law will increase their medical costs and taxes, according to an Aug. 8 Fox News poll. The survey found 57 percent of those polled felt the way ObamaCare was being rolled out was "a joke."

Obama: GOP Favors ‘Hurting,’‘Harming’ and ‘Sticking it to’ Americans in Defunding Obamacare Debate
In a strongly worded defense of the healthcare law, President Barack Obama accused congressional Republicans who favor defunding Obamacare of a willingness for “hurting” sick people,“harming” the economy and “sticking it to” Americans.
But there’s also a group of Republicans in Congress working hard to confuse people, and making empty promises that they’ll either shut down the health care law, or, if they don’t get their way, they’ll shut down the government,” Obama said Saturday during his weekly address

At the end of the day, while Americans are still on the fence about the Affordable Care Act as a blanket concept, when asked about particular remedies that the law includes, the public is overwhelmingly supportive

This suggests that the president has a messaging problem, not a policy problem --- whereas the Republicans simply lack any substantive alternative, let alone a popular one.

All of the above suggests that the current fight over health care reform has nothing to do with the Affordable Care Act and everything to do with the president who signed it.

Never mind the fact that the law already shows promising and valuable impact even before it’s fully in effect. Never mind the fact that cost estimates are dropping and, starting in 2014, the law will contain overall health care costs that are crippling our household budgets.

Never mind the fact that the central component of the law was a Republican idea. Conservative ideologues are willing to sacrifice much-needed health care reform and the well-being of millions of Americans who don’t have health insurance or are being denied care because of pre-existing conditions, lifetime caps on spending or other injustices -- all for the sick goal of undermining President Obama.
