Four years ago, the economy was hemorrhaging jobs; now it's gaining jobs. Four years ago, the unemployment rate was going up; now it's going down. Four years ago, the stock market was crashing; now it's reaching new heights. Four years ago, the deficit was getting bigger; now it's getting smaller. Four years ago, the American auto industry was on the verge of collapse; now it's thriving. Hell yes there's a record for Obama to run on.

But consumer spending remains the U.S. economy's biggest engine, and expectations for third-quarter economic growth improved after the Commerce Department reported a 1.1 percent increase in retail sales during September. The reading, which beat analysts' forecasts, builds on other signs of growing economic momentum, including a drop in the jobless rate last month and a rise in consumer confidence. "The news flow on the U.S. economy keeps getting better," said Chris Williamson, an economist at Markit in London.

What we see here is that on the ultimate production side indicator things are growing, just like retail sales are growing.
