Full story: Evening Sun

Price gouging at its finest. The propane gas companies are gouging every time they make a delivery.

It may not be price gouging, it may just be stupidity. Many of these companies bought bulk contracts while prices were still rising in hopes of actually making money if the market continued in this direction. Now even though the market has dropped dramaticly they're stuck and if you have a service agreement with them, so are you.

"Where is the government regulation on this issue that affects many consumers?"

Pulease!!!! More big government? NO! It's called free enterprise, go somewhere else. We don't need regulation, we need competition.

I had a propane fuel delivery on Saturday. I paid $3.09 a gallon. HOw is it that these companies are getting away with this??? How are average people like us supposed to aafford to pay $3.09 a gallon for approx 150 gallons every 5 weeks???? thats over $2000 for just a few winter months!

You can only change suppliers if you don't have a leased underground tank!!! Otherwise, there is the cost to dig up the tanks and change them out as well.

I have a leased tank from Aero, 3.19 last month. I called Shipley, 2.79.

Shipley will "buy" the tank from Aero. Check it out.

Call to compare prices.

is it just me, or does this sentence make no sense at all? "I usually don't get delivery until January but since they could charge this crazy price plus a fuel surcharge, when fuel is lower than it has been in four or more years, plus an administrative fee - what is this I need to pay the help for them to run the business. "

It is not always an easy task to change suppliers. If you rent your tanks it can be quite costly to switch (especially if they are underground). I completely agree with her... how are they getting away with this? Why did they insist on filling the tanks in December if they new that their prices would drop in January? I'll tell you why...they are ripping people off!!

In October, I locked into $3.39. I heard many school districts locked into prices too and cannot get out of the contract. This is bull!! No wonder our school taxes are so freaking high. Even though the prices are now much lower, I am still paying $3.39 for propane (so are the schools). When I called to complain about my neighbor paying less their response to me was since I was locked in, there was nothing they can do. So even though prices might go to $1.99, I will still be paying $3.39!!! IT'S JUST NOT RIGHT!!!

What don't you understand, a contract is a contract. If the price went up I bet you wouldn't be complaining. Next time take a chance, don't sign a contract.

Look at your contracts carefully. Some have a buy out amount and some you can get out of once they've supplied you with XXX gallons. Look and read your contracts. Companies aren't going to be forth coming with this info. Investigate it for yourself.

i wonder how many people went with those contracts, i know i recieved information but i wasnt locking myslef into anything like that especially for a utility. And Yes Mason's is your best choice, they are a great small company and the customer service is wonderful, alot of companies could use to mimic their way of doing business. Good Luck to all of you.

I agree - Mason's is a really nice company to do business with. We switched about 2 years ago after we received a notice from Shipley that our budget was going up by 65% per month although we still had over $400 credit! I rec'd a refund from Shipley for $663 from the credit & gas in the tanks & got gas from Mason's for $1.90. Mason's just filled our tanks on a cold, cold New Year's Eve at $2.00 per gallon. Great company!

Makes perfect sense to me. They delivered weeks early to charge a higher price on the propane and she is also complaining about a fuel surcharge and admin fee on top of the crooked prices charged.
