i agree a walkway over the road is a great idea, Ive been saying that for years now . It would also help with the traffic not just the safety of the workers,

Sometimes, more frequently than you might imagine, I've witnessed pedestrians stepping right out into the cross walk even when vehicles including trucks are literally within two or three car lengths from the "safe zone" for crossing. I guess, and this is an assumption on my part the folks using the crosswalk think that they don't have to stop and wait for the roadway to become clear and then cross. Conversely, I see motorists begin to stop when the folks needing to cross are nowhere near the cross walk area or some motorists are oblivious or don't care and want to use their car as a battering ram.

If Utz management is really concerned with employee safety then they need to spend the money and put in a cross-over (bridge) or a cross-under (tunnel) or a set of traffic lights that always flash yellow and then turn red when people need to cross. With all the money the company earns, and they earn a lot, undertaking such an endeavor would be smart. It would demonstrate to employees they care about their well being. Plus I'm sure there is some kind of tax loophole that the company could get that money back.

This is a waste of money! You could put a beacon out there and people on their cellys wont see it!Cross there all the time. Car coming from your left stops, you step into that lane and wait for someone from the right to stop. They just keep motoring by without even noticing you! The guy on the left gets the craps of waiting! I stood at that sign in the street and pointed at it and they never even see you! What Whitson with his answers need to do is park one of his cars next to the building for one month and cite everyone who does this and the word will get out and the problem will go away!

I know for a fact that Utz has already looked in to the idea of the over the road walkway and the 'tunnel'- the latter not being an option. I also know for a fact that Utz DOES have safety awareness for this issue but you can only present these options to the employees. The employee has to have the common sense and capability of retaining these safety tips and USE THEM! Most children have better street crossing sense than the employees at Utz's that think they have the right to step in front of cars just to cross. I driven down High Street numerous times and have had Utz employees step right out in front of me; a lot of them never even look - they come down the steps and walk straight out in to the street!!!! The don't care that there are cars coming down the street. It's like they're daring you to hit them. Apparently some of them got their wish. High Street is not a pedestrian street only and the employees need to wake up to that fact. I agree that something needs to be done at this crossing but like I said, the biggest thing not being used here is COMMON SENSE on the part of the Utz employees.

Utz should just build a pedestrian bridge and be done with it.But thats just too easy a solution.

These accidents are cause by moron motorists and employees that are in too much of a damn hurry. The one a kid went around a vehicle, stopped for pedestrians, on the right. Everyone does it all the time and that is illegal. Employees you dont own the road, motorists stay off the phone, slow down and pay attention. A pedestrian bridge would have to be high to allow semi truck traffic and a tunnel is a maintenance issue and you would be complaining about that too.

There are workers who just step out, like anything else a few. I think it depends wich cross walk you are at, the delivery, "english" speaking end of the building, or the plant ,"spanish" speaking end of the building! At the one end you could most likely help cut down the illegal alien problem in the area! A cross over bridge will not work. How many workers do you think are gonna walk up steps and back down to cross the street?Like it was earlier stated, the police need to sit back and wwatch this and cite the drivers and walkers who just step out.

Is it not possible for Utz to buy property in the rear of the plant and put their parking lot there?

The sale of the existing parking lot would help defray whatever costs are incurred.

One would think that Utz would show more concern for the safety of their employees.

This isn't going to solve anything. Some ignorant people that work at Utz don't look and just cross, while I'm supposed to have enough reaction time to stop for someone that just stepped out in front of me. I do stop for the people that kindly stand there and wait to cross.

While we're on the subject of pedestrian crosswalks, do the two STOP signs in front of KOHL's mean anything to anybody????

Sounds easy to say build a bridge over the road. Most Tractor/trailer rigs are a min of 13'6" high. There might be some older people or handicapped people working there that can't climb those stairs to cross.

I would have to agree with you on this. And in addition there would be others that just would not want to use it. Another post suggested another parking area and selling the one across the street..considering the real estate climate, just who is going to buy a parking lot? It is a shame that the simple answer of both pedestrian and motorist being more cautious and aware of the surroundings isn't good enough to solve the problem.

The employees are walking down steps already to cross the street. I agree that the bridge may be a hindrance to tractor trailers. If Utz truly was concerned about the employees welfare, they should build a tunnel under High street. I thought I heard that they have potato storage in the "basement". So its not like they don't already have a way downstairs.
The employees don't cross in groups. When one is almost across the street, another employee will then start to cross, when they are almost across the street, then another will start to cross. This ties up traffic on very busy street.

The workers walk out with out stopping or looking. The signs say "pedestrians IN the crosswalk"......they need to be taught like school kids to stop, look, then cross. Something must and needs to be done. Thank you UTZ for doing something about this. Hope those in the accidents are all ok... Comes down to - be responsible for yourself, like always. It's not the other persons job to take care of you! Be alert and stya alive!(And drivers do need to PAY ATTENTION)

Here is an idea, why not made an overhead crossing.
It would be the most safe option for the employees and it will keep traffic flowing at a normal rate during a high commute time.

Wow - I agree with you - Motorists stay off the phone, pay attention and slow down - Pedestrians pay attention, look both ways at least a couple of times and automatically assume that the motorists aren't paying attention. Isn't this the same type of issue we have at Hanover Schools where crossing guards are getting hit? Instead of making everyone take responsibility for their actions, let's see if we can't legislate or engineer around personal responsibility. What happened to the two motorists that hit the pedestrians? Did they lose their license?

Teach the employees to look both ways before entering the cross walk. I have seen people just walk right out in front of traffic and expect the traffic to stop on a dime. They also could have a crossing guard at shift change. Much like schools did tor years.
