I usually get upset about this sort of thing, but hiring a part time handy man without advertising is no big deal. 9 out of 10 times, a handyman position is filled when someone knows someone who is good at fixing things.

If this guy was a good fit, why not hire him. It's not like the council hired a police chief or a full time admin position without publicizing it.

Really not a big deal in my opinion.

I agree. Worry about something else.

Well it may not seem like a "big deal", but the probably is if they get away with the small things they then will try and get away with the bigger things. As taxpayers we must stand up to local, state, and federal government and hold them accountable for the "small things"

I would disagree, it should have been opened up to the public. I am not disagreeing that the man cannot do the job but it should have been opened up to other applicants. Does this guy really need the money as he is a retired fire Lt. from Harrisburg. Did you check the unemployment rate in Adams county lately. I am sure there are tons of individuals that would work part time and make $9.50 an hour to make ends meet and to put food on their table. Just another example of small town politics

I agree, the job no matter if it is part time or full time should be advertised. We need to hold all levels of Goverment accountable! The unemployment is very high and there are many families out there who don't know where the next meal is coming from. I'm sure this person who taken this job if qualified however, I thin he is also no on the unemployed list in the county. We need to do all we can to get help the people who really need a job to make ends meet!!

I agree - the job should've been posted for all qualitfied applicants to apply. These days even a 9.50 an hour job can make it or break it for some families - everyone should have had a shot at it. Especially since its taxpayer money.

I believe it is required by law to advertise all government position openings.

Only those positions that are full time and with benefits must be advertised. Otherwise councils and supervisors from any municipality can hire whoever they want, whenever they want for part-time positions. This is common practice just about everywhere but it is the first time anyone complained.

Special exceptions run in this family. Remember when brother Tom Weaver tried to create his own Adams County court house position a few years ago? LOL

Maybe the Borough isn't legally bound to advertise a part-time position but ethically they should have and avoided this whole mess. It goes back to the old saying that just because you have the right to do something doesn't always mean it is the right thing to do.

My problem is that I think he is a Notre Dame fan. There are too many of them around. If he was a Penn State or Pitt fan, then by all means, he should get the job.

Sounds like another town wants recognition besides York Springs , East Berlin, Abbottstown, New Oxford.

Not the first time or place that a complaint like this has happened. Look at Mount Joy Township. And they got away with the hiring of family and friends without advertising.

Early bird gets the worm! Sometimes less is more too. Look at all of the money that was saved in filling the position compared to spending months of interviews and reviews. I am sure if the guy does not work out they will find someone else to do the job.

Politicians hiring family and/or close friends should always be a "big deal". Hasn't anyone learned why D.C. is so screwed up? This is just a smaller version of a national mess.
