Gov. Susana Martinez wants to build small veterans cemeteries throughout state
#1 Jul 17, 2013
seems like we already have a big problem in NM with small cemetery maintenance. Not sure this is a good idea.
Maybe one or perhaps two geographically dispersed larger ones could be work, preferably associated with a military or historic site. Meeting the modern requirements for developing cemeteries (and getting grants) and the costs of equipment, maintenance and security for mini cemeteries seems infeasible and doing a half-assed job seems disrespectful. For example, compare the Veterans Cemetery in Santa Fe with just about any other facility in the state.

I read this story on Martinez's ill-conceived plan to build small veterans cemeteries in New Mexico. This is an example of more poor planning by the Martinez administration. It is more like a PR gimmick. The cost of state veteran cemeteries will be at least $7 million dollars per year - even with Federal money. For instance, here is the Arkansas budget for their state cemeteries (See Page 456).

Hm, so cut their bennies while they're alive to they can croak earlier, then spend the saved money instead on planting them. Wow, NM thinking at its greatest (not).

It will be more expensive to expand it in the future, so she is trying to make "rural" (read: poorer) people moved out. This is a dishonor to NM veterans. All NM deserve to be buried in the SF Veteran's cemetery, not treated like trash and trucked outside the city as if they were non-humans, like used pets.
This guv is a piece of Anti-American filth. To dishonor our veterans like this, so she can save her patricians a buck.
All NM veterans should be buried in the Veterans' Cemetery in SF, not just the ones who are expedient to her needs. Maybe if her Grandpa had been an American veteran instead off a Mexican Communist who invaded Colombus NM and killed Americans ,she would be more amenable to doing her job, instead of screwing over the very people who made the country her ancestors chose to relocate to great!

I agree. Why can't there just be two great Veteran Memorial Cemeteries, one in the northern part of the state and the other in the southern part of New Mexico. Nevada has two state of the art Veteran cemeteries that are kept up wonderfully and do a great job to honor all their veterans.
