Although 30 years have passed, I can only imagine that those that were affected by this tragedy still grieve as if this tragedy occurred recently, especially due to the mystery surrounding what happened to these men and their fate.

My condolences to the family and friends of those that were lost. May the families find comfort and closure with the ceremony in honor of these men. God rest their souls.

Amazing the battered boat was even found and that DNA testing was available to ID the bones even though it might have been bleached by the salt water and sun. I remember how so distraught the relatives were on TV. May all rest in peace. All the rest of you boaters should spend the extra money for flare guns and tracking devices so the Coast Guard can find you. Always ask the commercial boaters to see the flares and devices. If they don't want to show, stay on land. That's my inborn survivalist instincts talking.

From article:

"Robert Malaiakini, a fisherman, said when he went out on a 25-foot boat looking for the five men, the ocean was perhaps the roughest he has ever experienced.

He said he said the swells were about 40 feet high, sometimes breaking at the crest, and the winds were blowing at more than 40 mph in Alenuihaha Channel."

I remember this story because the Coast Guard helicopters used specially trained pigeons in a glass bubble to search for the Sara Joe. The search report indicated two of the three pigeons got a fix on the men but the human observers could not locate what they saw. Unfortunately Project Sea Hunt was later dropped by President Regan because it was a non essential program.
