40 foot seas in that tiny boat. They had no chance against the power of the ocean.

barely looks like 17 feet to me

I am no boater --- but even I can tell that thing couldn't keep five people alive on the open ocean in a storm

the tied to the boat theory sounds as good as any

From S.B. article: "Then, in 1988, a Hawaii man who was involved in the search was on Taongi atoll in the northern part of the Marshall Islands - roughly 2,200 miles southwest of the Hawaiian Islands - when he saw a battered boat with Hawaii registry numbers belonging to the Sarah Joe."

The unfortunate truth is that "those whom the sea has taken shall never be free". Not until the memory passes. Let them go.

5 people in a Boston Whaler is the limit when the seas are moderately choppy ... and if things really start to blow, they had no chance over a long time, it would be difficult to maneuver body positions in attempting to navigate thru huge 40 ft swells. It must have been chaos out there for those guys ...

The Boston Whaler is unsinkable. The motor must have quit. White boat in all those white cap seas is almost impossible to spot. Flares , signal mirror , waterproof vhf. You know the list. I almost became a missing boater , was unwise enough to take a test ride with a fool haole (I'm haole too) out of Miloli'i that almost became a oneway trip to the Marshall Islands. Kaneloa ... the long man... show some respect and live.
