...when Hidenwood Food Lion was a Colonial Store, Riches became Jessica's Market, Terry's drive in at the corner of Harpersville and Jefferson, Carrols Hamburger Stand, when Monty's Penguin was at the corner of Robinson and Jefferson, Sam's Steak Den at the corner of Prince Drew and Warwick, Robert Hall Village, when Jefferson Ave was 2 lanes and you had to stop for the cows crossing at Yoder Dairy, the Hot Shoppe in New Market, Nachman's Department store, Brennens bakery, Crums Bakery...and so much more...how about you?

I also remember going over the huge hill on Oyster Point Rd crossing the railroad tracks.
Oriana Road went down to the Oriana Station (just under the Denbigh Blvd overpass) and then continued on to York Co before there was a Route 17 there... and on the other end of Oriana, it connected to the "Great Warwick Road" (Rt 60) at the Warwick Courthouse right where Leggett and Jones auto repair now sits - and just up from that, it connected to Hoopes Road that went down to where the Denbigh public boat ramp is (before there was a Denbigh Blvd.) where an old man named Hoopes had a marine railway -a yard where they pulled boats up out of the water to repair them.
Right next to the old Robert Hall Village - where CostCo and CompUSA (rip) are now - there was an Arabic Restaurant, it was very short-lived but does anyone recall what it's name was... As a kid I remember eating there with my family way over-cooked hamburgers while watching a floor show of some sort - everyone dressed in white robes and turbins... did I dream it? No one seems to remember this place...

Oh, yeah, and Highs ice cream in Hidenwood, the Foozball Parlor that is now a Subway, Hardee's on Rt. 17, Burger King that is now a Hollywood Video, CNU when it was a field, McDonalds on Warwick that is now a bank, Port Author when it was near South Ave., Woolworths, the snack bar in Hidenwood Pharmacy. Ahhh memories.

Does anybody remember having to pay 10 cents to use the toilet at Roses in Newmarket? We are much better off now. We can pee for free! Thanks Joe

Yes, I remember that , and also at Murphy's on the other side of the shopping center you had to pay 10 cents also. ha. I remember Hoffeimers shoe store , JC Pennys, Standard Drug Store, Crumbs
bakery, Miller and Roads, The Hot Shoppe, Roses
Barr Brothers Jewlery Store, or was that Barkley
and Sons, Newmarket ROcking Chair Theater.
AND I AM OLD<,,, on the corner from Hoffeimers
used to be a grocery store called THE CO-OP and they boxed your groceries in cardboard boxed and they put them on a conveyer belt and you picked them up outside. We were excited as children to go to the Co=OP ha.(Remember we lived in York County and we did not have much there)
I remember the Colonial Store on Jefferson Avenue.
What A Burger was on the corner of Jefferson and Mercury Blvd.(And the hamburgers were better then)
And every teenagers hang out, SHONEYS Drive Inn
on Jefferson, Tary's Drive Inn and Burger Chef.
We would ride through over and over and turn around in Moores Building Supply and ride through again. I remember the Piggly Wiggly on Jefferson near Brake King too. Monty's Penguin was a wonderful drive in and we loved eating breakfast
as a teenager at the Blue Star Diner. Hilton Village is where we shopped for our jeans and tie
died shirts and sashes. There was another drive in on Jefferson near Casey's Chevrolet also.
What I miss the most is downtown Newport News.
Nachmans, Grants, Leggets, Montgomery Wards,
all the cute little Greek Restaurants, and
Woolworths, we loved eating at Woolworth's lunch counter with our mom, then Christmas Shopping
in downtown Newport News. And the movie theaters,
Paramount and Palace in downtown NN> and the Anchor drive In on Jefferson.
My younger sisters loved Plaza Roller Rink in their day. Things have really changed in NN>
Merry Christmas
I guess I remember more because I am old. ha ha
I hate changes though, I think things were much better and safer back in those days. We shopped
at night and never felt like anyone would harm you in any way.

And best of all...you could walk down the street without worries, you didn't have to lock your doors and Roses by the Hilton Theater had the best candy display around.

Back in the day did you ever think that your tax money would go to support a bunch of thugs? Those were the days when you actually had to work for a living or you didn't eat. We have really evolved haven't we ?

I forgot all about Belo's. I remember walking to Belo's, going across the field by Green oaks to get there. This is where burger king now stands. There was always a bubble gum smell that came from the gas station at the corner of green oaks and Jefferson, it was like they pumped the smell into the air. What a memory!

At one time, Sammy's was a major sports eatery. Remember the wall made of baseball bats?
And there was Barney's across from Ferguson High School. Mother Mary Passage suspended me for going there.
Also for smoking in the bathroom, skipping class... She was quite the bi*tch
Was Barney's before the Foozball joint? I remember Mother Mary..I think her last year was in 70 or 71 right? When Ferguson went from 5 yrs to 3 yrs with the 8th and 9th being sent to the old Newport News High school. I spent 8th at Ferguson, 9th at the old NNHS and 10-12 @ Ferguson. The school was really messed up after the start of busing.

Wow all these memories. Some I recall others I don't. Does anyone remember when Nettles Drive was Warwick Blvd.? I loved the Highs Ice Cream Store in Hidenwood, and was beyond thrilled when they added BubbleGum ice cream! We also loved Paul Harris store where you could get candy, a nab and a cold grape soda. As teenagers we use to go to Melzers beach, swim over to Menchville Marina buy beer and swim back and drink it, then ride our bikes home, Melzers Beach is also where we use to "turtle" our sail boats in the summer.:-) I don't recall; did anyone here mention Champs Hamburgers? YUMMIE!
