Libraries' free books, computers pull in patrons during recession

There are 30 comments on the Hampton Roads Daily Press story from Mar 23, 2009, titled Libraries' free books, computers pull in patrons during recession. In it, Hampton Roads Daily Press reports that:

Ernest Hemingway was fond of saying that all good books have one thing in common - "they are truer than if they had really happened." Libraries in the area have something in common lately - the truth of a crippling economic slump is causing more patrons to access the free information they offer.

The problem is the library does not have enough staff to support the number of people coming in.

I use the library whether the economy is good or bad. I just like to read and can't see buying a book only to read once and put on a shelf.

Citizens should pay a visit to the Hampton main branch off of Victoria Blvd. Carpet worn out and ripped up, ceiling upstairs caving in due to water leakage with tables and chairs stacked up, whole areas are roped off because apparently they are deemed too dangerous. It looks terrible. I wrote a letter to the editor about this but the DP opted not to publish it. Hampton residents please take a look and then go look at the Salt Ponds boat way that is set to be dredged with tax money- oh yeah-- most of you aren't allowed access to that.
