Rich's Drive-In where Cap City is now on South side of Mercury allmost to Chestnut Ave. I remember once the sign said 10 pieces of chicken for 79 cents. I think I saved my lunch money for 2 days, drove up there, and for my 79 cents got a box of brittle bones and chicken skin, the guy said "you get what you pay for" and he was right!!
Yeah, WGH The Swingin' Six: George Crawford, Bob Calvert, Dick Lamb, Gene Loving, Keith James, Roger Clark.(How the h**l do I remember all that?) I could probably think of stuff all nite long since finding this thread. but I just remembered I work for a living. Thanks for the memories, I'll be back.
I haven't thought about Rich's Drive-In in forever. Before seat belts my family went there a few times and us kids were on our knees facing the back of the car so we could use the back shelf for our food and drinks while we drove down the road.

You mentioned WGH - I posted a website earlier where Dale Parsons has collected all kinds of WGH stuff. It is so cool to hear their voices again, but on one page is the music countdown sheets that WGH use to put out and remember how in the upper right corner of the sheet they would have a picture of the week's "Platter Princess" which would be a teen from a local high school. So cool to remember this stuff again.

Does anyone remember the Sambo's on Mercury? I can't remember exactly where it was but I think it was around the Goodman Hardware area.

I remember Newmarket North having two theaters. I saw Midway there and Star Wars. Shakey's is one of the first restaurants I ever remember; it was the first time I ever had pizza.(My parents actually had a hard time getting me to try it!) Speaking of Shakey's, I'd forgotten all about it until I was living in Tokyo about two years ago. One day, I was coming up out of the metro onto a busy street and straight in front of me was a Shakey's! Flood of memories on the spot.

Does anyone remember the Family Fish House? I think it was near Armistead Avenue. I remember great flounder there, good hushpuppies, and one of the best seascape paintings I've ever seen.

But the A&P had their own canned products called Ann Page. About Burger Chef on Mercury. I think there was also a Burger Chef near the corner of Todds and Mercury. I haven't been there in a while but I think there is/was a ski store on that spot. Does anyone remember Carol's another hamburger joint? I know there was one on Jefferson but don't remember if Hampton had one. What about Eli's Restaurant on Mercury at the overpass before Fox Hill? Did anyone ever party at the Chateau on Pembroke?
That ski shop is now gone (the building where that Burger Chef was) it was behind (sort of) a 7-11 which is now a laundromat. Carrolls YES in Hampton, corner of Mercury and Cunningham where a Wendy's is now. Working there was MY FIRST JOB!! I made big bucks too $1.10 an hour. That's one dollar and ten cents. But burgers were 15 cents cheeseburgers 19 cents and fries 10 cents, same prices as McDonalds near Mercury and Martha Lee.
This would have been circa 1967.

The answer about the Chateau is yes, and that's all I will say on that subject. jim

Re going to Kecoughtan 1) one year I had to go to summer school to get past the 2nd semester of Geometry........2) On another occasion, some pals did try to paint a pig green and get inside your library to let it go........This was in reprisal for yall dumping some stinky CRAB shells on the lawn at our place....The pig adventure was unsuccessful, however I recall we did get our revenge that Friday night at Darling Stadium jc

Chateau on West Pembroke, past Shoneys going toward the NNWS line IF my memory serves.
British Sterling OR English Leather..our shirts were GANT or Eagle...Beecroft & Bull, Young Men's Shop, or Hawkins Knight 100% cotton, took 'em to Chin's Cleaners for "super-super starch." First time you'd wear em with the button-down collar unbuttoned, next time you wore it you buttoned them, then back to Chin's. Levis and low-cut Converse All-Stars, Black with white strings OR White with school color strings,(mine were obviously red).... initiations, Mosquito Beach

Another "music" memory. Does anyone remember a "club" for teenagers in Hampton in an old theater? Loud music and "black lights" and no alcohol. Can't remember it's name. Circa 1968. Some more WGH memories..."Wax to Watch," "Double Play," WGH "Litter Boxes" that would sit behind the back windshield of your car and "Chicken Man."

I remember the "litter boxes", but I don't remember the rest. Yet another thing I had totally forgotten about! I don't remember any club for teens. I remember there was a bar that I think was on Kecoughtan called the Oaks or White Oaks? Does anyone remember that? Places like that were so easy to go to if you were underage. Byrds, Tomahawk Inn - they didn't care about age.(Did I say that?) There was also a hotel on Mercury that a lot of local bands played at. Remember Robbin Thompson Band and States? We use to see them play at this hotel, CNC and the Chamberlin.

#162 Well GOD rest her soul Mrs. McD the owner is long gone. But, she was kind to the boys, her son,my brother and many others. Playing pool there was fun and momma tended bar at the Tomahawk. lol

White Oaks or Lodge was not a place for the disciplined kids,if you get my meaning. We never thought of going, and actually did not know many who did. Mostly guys went. Speaking as a female mind you, no puns intended.

I remember a good few souls at the colleges around that were pretty good musicians, there were parties at the colleges, what happened to most, I don't know. Robbin T was well known around town.

Remember the odor from the Crab Factory???? GAWD.

Horne's Coliseum Inn? Right there at 64 & Mercury? I remember Robbin Thompson and Jimmy McDonald and States Robbin Thompson is still around Richmond, I've heard him on the radio doing jingles for the lottery and some Virginia Is For Lovers song

for the VA Tourism people, nothing as good as their big hit "Candy Apple Red"
Album was called "2 B's please". I last saw States back in the 80's at some dump in Norfolk, either the Boathouse at Bessies or 4400 Club (I think it was called) on Hampton Blvd. near ODU.
Those guys were great, when States broke up he started some progressive new wave thing "Neo Duo" and never heard from Jimmy McDonald again.

Remember Rodney and the Exciters, later called themselves the Sheepherders.?

Remember "Beanies" near the EastHampton Bridge on Pembroke?
