I was born and raised in Wythe. Some of the teacher names I remember from Wythe; Dameril, Aldridge, Kostyal, Urquhart, Griffith, and Bowers. Used to love the Wythe Theatre and the pharmacy next door. The Colonial Store, Woolworths, there was a shoe store and a post office. Across the street was the bowling alley with duck pins and the local black kids had jobs setting the pins up. I worked at The B&L Pet Shop there for awhile. Bill's BBQ, the Brown Derby, The Rendezvous, High's...
I was in Pack 10. I have pics on myspace of my 6th grade class and midget baseball team. Used to ride my bike to the West End Pharmacy and every now and then got to hang out with the pharmacists Ben and Charles where we watched wrestling in the back. Remember seeing Thunder Road at The Langley, there was no I64 or tunnel, there was the ferry from Ft Monroe.
Charles is my dad. I remember the snack bar and building models with my dad in the back room of the pharmacy. He is still local- Williamsburg.

I remember hampton being nice and...... Wait I was dreaming!

Only here a few years and hate it. No matter how hard I try to be nice, people still act like shit.

Costco used to be here but like all the other good businesses, it moved on.

The schools are a joke and no one cares about the area. The few that do care are worn out and tired from trying to hold it together.

It always amazes me how black people want/demand equality, but turn around and segregate themselves. Funny how that works out.

My plan is to be out of here in 3 years. They can keep the segregation and rude attitudes.

A friendly suggestion to business owners here: stop selling shitty rims and alcohol. Uplift the community and make people feel respected.

But that's always too much to ask.

Call it luck, but I bought a home in Poquoson for almost nothing back in 77. Having lived in Hampton till my early 20s, was pure tortue. The old neighborhood is black now as the schools are..
I remember my first job search was an opening at the City. I got on the elevator at Hampton City Hall and went up to the HR floor. I must have filled out 2 sheets stating my race. As I entered the elevator to head to the bottom floor, a sign, yes a sign, was posted IN THE ELEVATOR.."WE ARE AN AFFIRMATIVE ACTION EMPLOYER" Well, I knew then that I just wasted 1 hour filling out that parks application.

So, I was chatting with my Mom about this thread. She grew up in Buckroe Beach at the very time that you're all chatting about here. She said I should see whether anyone remembers Smitty's (curb service hamburger joint, near Armistead?) She also remembers a hamburger joint named Rich's...somewhere in Buckroe. Does The Ranch Steak House ring a bell?
Mom has fond memories of the Buckroe Beach Amusement Park. It was the first roller coaster she ever rode, but she says it had nothing on the roller coaster that was in Norfolk.
my friend is Smitty, the kids now run the place and Smitty just kicks back and enjoys life. don't member now exactly where Rich's was but think it was owned by Jimmy Rich, an independent local grocery chain owner. Marinade recipe for Ranch House skirt steak: full bottle of A-1, squeeze juice from 1/6 fresh lemon, grate one big garlic clove, 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard, mix all up. Beat up the steak and poke it with a fork thoroughly.Put steak in shallow pan and marinate, turning, no less than overnight. has to be grilled. fire

Well, I wish his kids would get the coleslaw a consistent quality.
It's hit or miss now.
I used to make special trips to get a pint of it but now I rarely go--2 out of three times it's going to suck.

That was Coach Coleman who Coached the Green grunts.I played running back and linebacker for him for 2-3 years in the mid-70s..his son was our fullback.. parents parked lights on the field for late practices and I had to ride my back back To Eliz Lakes..went to CPT John Smith after we got split from Phillips.Loved those games at Gosnolds on Sat mornings -opening day was like the scene out of Bad News Bears on labor day always coupled with the Hampton fair at Gosnolds.. and we could pedal all the way to Burger Chef on Mercury for those great milkshakes they served..now a flower shop..Green Grunts-- stioll have my first trophy from 1973..we were tough across Hampton and played in the Clam Bowl at Poquoson's stadium!

Oh...1 more thing for now. I just saw Death of OceanView Park on TV last week!!! I went there during filming too and got Mike Conners and Martin Landau's autographs! If I remember correctly one of the reasons they closed and sold that park was safety concerns...especially that old wooden coaster. I believe when they blew that thing up for the finale it wouldn't come down and they ended up having to pull it down with dozers and cables, simulating the explosions!
Silverthorns Dance Studio (I drummed for the twirling core)
Jones Jr High ( Jr High with a planetarium)!
Hampton Fair Days at Gosnold's Hope Park
Green Grunts football for Phillips elementary and my coach who WAS Sgt Carter from Gomer Pyle (name escapes me now)
Childress Gas station brother lived next door to us in Fox Hill (Dave and Linda Childress)
sure more will follow...this is great! TONS of awesome memories

Sad that people have to make a thread about how good things "used to be".

The Hampton area is a wasteland now for tattoo shops, fast food joints, payday loans, this or that rim shops and just about any other negative store.

The good people that used to live here moved on. Anyone left is regretting not moving.

But hey! A new place opened up on mercury called mirroz!

Next time you ride down mercury blvd, try and find ONE decent restaurant that serves quality food.(leave out the typical upper fast food places like olive garden, outback steak.)

I recall playing football in 75-78 at HHS.Those were great times.I think out entire 11 starters on offense go major college scholarships, even a few backups in 75,,14-0 record.Hampton is ok now and so is PHS.We do have one thing back then, 'major universitys, coaches flooded the school.Today, HHS and Phoebus hardly get 1 or 2 top school recruits, as most if any, end up at ODU Div 1-AA or maybe CNU. Back then, we had schools and players getting 50 major offers from Ca to Fl.

Just found this site- my memories of growing up in Hampton

Grew up on corner of Syms and Eaton Streets. Getting a Dr. Pepper and bag of peanuts at Wilson Brother corner grocery store for my Grandfather when he came up from South Carolina to visit. Crabbing on the Colonel's nearly inaccessible pier. Catching minnows over the Carter's seawall. Cutting grass around Marvin's huge lot and being careful not to damage his azaleas. My father working at Langley AFB and hearing the wind tunnels at NASA. Friday nights at Buckroe Beach. Smell of the popcorn, hotdogs people laughing. My first girlfriend and walking to Bennie's for a coke. All gone now, including Syms Elementary, Thorpe Jr. High, Langley theater, old town Library and the fleets of fishing boats.

Hot towels, the leather strops, hot shaving cream soap, sure do! Had my first hair cut there and continued until either I went to college or they closed.

Couldn't help myself. This area 757 is a major leauge baseball hotbed, MLB, now. Football as you say has recruits but they are small schools and few make it to their sophmore year and/or transfer like Oscar Smith players.., ODU, JMU, and VT & UVA are not exacly powerhouses. We have many pros in MLB but noone in the NFL. Mayo comes to mind but he is a backup on a very poor Pats defense and the other who are there are 3rd string. Vick is a backup on most teams and below average overall compared to top NFL QBs. David Wright is probably the top pro athlete in the area.

I remember when in '72, Elvis did a matinee show one afternoon at the Coliseum. We were in line for a movie at the Coliseum Four theaters (I think for "The Poseidon Adventure") when several limos and many police cars raced up to the Sheraton Hotel main entrance and Elvis was ushered out surrounded by MANY bodyguards into the limo and off to the Coliseum. Whole episode took under a minute. Wasn't a fan at the time, but that was pretty slick.
I remember seeing cheech and chong in that theatre and everyone there was smoking dope.LOL.
