Quarstein's a gem

There are 238 comments on the Hampton Roads Daily Press story from Dec 7, 2007, titled Quarstein's a gem. In it, Hampton Roads Daily Press reports that:

Reference the article "Hampton hires historian for $120,000 a year," Nov. 8. The recent letters of complaints about John Quarstein and his salary as Hampton's new historian have prompted me to write.

deflecting and diversion are now your tactics?

spend your time giving us what you have promissed. Answer the questions as you ask others to answer the ones you propose to them.

could it be my ISP could register as WMSBG? DUH!

So, have you have lost all the info. that you are basing your facts on that you are using to criticize people here -- or not?

And if you are working overtime, which is the excuse you give us here as to why you can not find the paper that you say you have. Spend your time tonight finding those "documents" not browsing the Internet.

When are they going to build those condo's you said they were going to build - I want one

I notice that you have given 1221 comments

ONE THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED AND TWENTY ONE !!!!!!!!!!

Do I detect a mania here?

Or a vendetta or agenda that reaches beyond this issue? oh I think so.

How in the world do have time to work overtime?

No wonder you can NOT produce the documents that you base you rants and raves on!

Dear War of Aggression,

I thank you for your kind concern on my behalf. But my personal line of Reynolds has been haunting the woods and rivers and plantations hereabouts since 1622, when Christopher Reynolds arrived as an 11-year-old indentured servant in the wake of the 1622 Native American unpleasantness. So when people start whining about the great antiquity of this holy soil, and how (after selling themselves, their souls, their tobacco crops and their real estate for centuries for ready cash) this particular backwater swamp should be spangled with golden stars from the National Trust, I have to laugh. And I always enjoy my laugh better when I use my own name--somehow it makes me feel like a real person, even if it makes me a real target.

But of course I believe you are entitled as freely to express your opinions. It should be part and parcel of this nation we have so painfully built--and alas cemented the foundations with so much blood--that everyone can express himself--even in person.

I confess that your advice sounds wiser than my faith .... It's all an adventure.

What makes you think the Civil War is over? Just because Lee surrendered? Lee was one general amongst many others that surrendered their army (against their will, I might add)

My sentiments go with the 43rd Battalion, 1st Virginia Cavalry. This unit would not and never did surrender. It was disbanded to return another day. And with the collapse of the Yankee Government near at hand, we will return sooner than one might believe.

Rest assured your new condo will be available soon. As to Waterman's Wife - let's slack up a bit. She's fighting a losing cause to preserve a way of life she and other Creekers enjoyed. The City has torn down our community center (just an old pier,of all things) in favor of the Mayor's waterfront development interests. If you've read the Molliken-DeYoung letter this becomes apparent.
If not, you should do so.

I also enjoy those with a sense of humor, no matter what flag they choose to wave. Thank you for the indulgences you have given me, and for the kindnesses you have offered me. As seems to have been the case with my South-leaning educator Professor Quarstein earlier, I have done with war and am now withdrawing from the field. Thanks for the memories!

You are spot on here. Quarstein is shill for Quarstein. Sloppy scholarship and self-agrandizement are par for his course.

Grandma, Quarstein is an experienced city employee. He knows when to hold them and when to fold them.
But he hasn't shown any interest in correcting bad information (like the Deep Creek Pier was built in 1959).
For the city historian to allow an entire community to slide into hisotry's trashbin is unacceptable.
He sure didn't help us...

An acquainstance was briefly corresponding with said historian who shared some sordid details with a few friends after the romance ended. certain allegations in regards to jvq placing his lover in a PAID position seem to be TRUE from what ive heard, along with far WORSE truths....this acquaintence was also offered an assistant position (in more than one way) it appears...acquaintence of mine is a good, decent person who has had a hard life and i started to investigate this "person of interest" and showed this acquaintence of mine several articles that were quite unsavory....when my acquaintence started questioning sincerity of promises that had been made, the romance fizzled very quickly....maybe MORE people need to do some investigating...my point here is that just because you were born into money and have political pull, why is it right to escape consequences for hurtful or morally wrong decisions or actions when people that happen to be poor are persecuted and made to pay by society for the slightest little infraction or poor decision making???
