Amy, trust me...the entire Bronx is safe again!
You should be ashamed of yourself Barbara. You must be talking about The Bronx when it was burning back in the 70s and everyone had written my precious borough off. How dare you say Arthur Avenue is not a safe block? Have you had the opportunity of visiting the Bronx lately? Yea, including your so called "doomed" block Arthur Avenue? If you have, you probably didn't recognized it and just passed right by it! Yea, Barbara my dear, the same Bronx that was burning in the 70s is burning no more! Real estate has gone up since the 70s honey. The average home costing almost 1 million dollars. When stores such as Target, Best Buys, Costco, JC Penney, Macy's and other major department stores decide they want to open new branches, they don't go downtown to your Manhattan anymore sweety, they come to The Bronx. Yes that was not a misprint, I repeat, they come to The Bronx. According to statistics Arthur Avenue is one of the safest streets in New York City. Don't believe me? Do your own research and don't dump on the Bronx, my Bronx, like you do in your Manhattan. Next time, before you condemn an area in my borough that you know nothing about... take your time and do some research. Get true facts. And remember... when your not sure of something.... it's best to keep your mouth shut and be considered an idiot than to oepn it and remove all doubt! How dare you!
The Arthur Avenue eateries are terrible that's why there is a Hospital one block away.

All together, this is a great article. DH and I will soon be moving to New York and have been interested in learning more about The Bronx, especially Little Italy.(We're from Boston's North End.) This article gave a great overview of the neighborhood, touching on nearly every aspect a new comer/visitor could be interested in. Thank you - we're going to start packing right away!
Well said Mike!! Barbara needs to stay out of the Bronx and go to school to learn how to write and spell.

The Bronx was once a beautiful place, many years ago Ihave been told. I moved in the 90s and it was like 500 eastends, NN, all on top of each other. The Bronx Zoo is ok for tourist as the Botanical Gardens and a walk across Fordham Univ.

Yes it was beautiful. The 'Grand Concourse' was in the 60s was breath taking. Now it's full of stripped cars, meter maids, tow truck, and crumbling buildings on each side.

The two block stretch area of Arthur Avenue is a sh-t hole visited by many Italians who cherish garbage italian food in the Bronx where they grew up, married and left the area. Its a two block stretch with filty stores of interest within the next three blocks going east for pastries, bread, meats, cheeses and fresh pasta. Mind you it is a three block stretch of terrible food. You can visit and be out of there in 1 hour or less after shopping. That's if you don't get mugged.
As far as the Bronx being safe forgetaboutit it is just like any other neighborhood. Be alert in the areas of high crime the south Bronx. You will get no respect driving in the Bronx. Road courtesy is out the window. The drie like they are the only one on the road and actually going nowhere. The worst drivers in New York, especially in the South Bronx. Thank goodness for respect, italian men are cherished and respected to a high degree in all the Bronx. There charisma, sense of humor, good looks and respect towards all women, make them a oddity item to the areas female population of many different ethnic women. If you dress to the 9's, and are a real greese ball italian you are a star in the Bronx. Go to the Bronx zoo and visit your inlaws and the Botanical garden while there. You can also go to City Island and eat in a waterfront setting while there.
You should be beaten with SALAMI You bum.

Whether a neighborhood is safe or not is relative. Compared to the 1970's, yes the majority of the Bronx is much safer. However, Belmont is not one of the safer areas in the bronx. It is rated the 23rd safest neighborhood in the Bronx, with a 5.3 out of 10 safety rating. If you're specifically looking for Italian neighborhoods that aren't as expensive (or 'safe') as a Bayridge or the Italian sections of Cobble Hill and Astoria, look at Dyker Heights and Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. I have heard Pelham Bay, Bronx is ok as well, although I will admit that I know less about that area. Overall, I would stay out of the Bronx (with the exception of Riverdale or Fordham) if you want a safe area (at least when compared to quite a few areas in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens.

Bronx Tale was a stupid movie imo. As for The Bronx, you can have it. I lived there over a decade. What really gets men are younger NYKERS who move to VA and try to speak mumbo jumbo NYC. I lost my NY accent and can't say the words: youts, new yawk,or even get you hot dawgs at Shea Stadium...Mayor Koch was an idiot and Dinkins was as retarded as Obama and Biden put together.

As a real estate worker, you must consider your customers. Coming to VA is not a good way to spend your time trying to get buyers. You are better off going to the Middle-East or Co-Op City. VA has some really stupid people but NYC is the mecca of all stupidity. You may hook a fish over at section 8 but you will have to provide the bus ticket to get them to NY.

I hear Little Italy in the Bronx is safe, but getting there from Manhattan is risky. Is this true? What's the best way to get there safely and back to Manhattan.

First find a taxi driver that speeks english, after 3 days of looking tell the driver to take you to the nearest gun shop buy 3 boxes of high explosives,2ak47s 2000 rounds of amo and a good pair of sneakers, your going to need the sneakers after you eat becouse you will never find another taxi to take you back to Manhattan.
