More property taxes for a public government school system that is the worst Division in the State? Vote **no** on property taxes. The school unions are grearing up and having meetings to make it seem ALL of you are for taxes for our precious thugs who hang out the bus windows and throw trash in the streets. HCS is 9 million in the red. Make these admns. get fired, it's called reduction in force(R.I.F.),,,FIRED!

Not really. A RIF is coming or has to due to the 'growing' debt. The city will be sending property taxes to homes that are empty and vaule your 1977 Impala at 10,000. More people will exodus, buisnesses will close like Coliseum Cent. and more schools will close like: Wythe, Mallory, Merrimac, Lee, etc. Only adms. making 55k-189k will be left to teach and will use the janitors to watch PE...
Unless Hampton and City Council can find a way to print money, it's just more of the same.

I'm not sure if I agree with you or not. In a few years Hampton will look like Detroit. Only a mad man would invest here with the overpriced, sorry government we have. How is it the same?

big raises. How about 2% which is the first they've had in 5 years. You must be really poor if 2% is considered huge to you. Maybe you should have stayed in school and gotten a better paying job. lol

Schools down in Hampton and a few here are 50 years old. Their energy bill must be 5 million past due by now. Some teachers, especially the top science & math ones deserve a raise, I agree.

I've raised sand about the venality that exists in the Hampton City government for years and yet the same clowns get voted in on City Council every year. Hampton is getting the government it deserves.

At one time teachers were woefully underpaid. In the Hampton public schools, at least, that is no longer the case. Look at what they are producing.

Most industries are judged by the product they produce. Why is the educational industry in the Hampton Public Schools different?

The increase in Hampton taxes was not passed for the sole purpose of helping the school system. The city also needed this increased revenue to keep the Hampton History Museum and Blue Bird Gap Farm open; to keep street lights burning, to keep a strong fire and police department and to support healthy families and our parks system. There were many more things listed that would be taken away without this increase. The increase will benefit all Hamptonians; not just the school system. It amazes me how many people think that city services are just free and don't require a strong tax base.

The City has to have money to operate. I don't begrudge it that. Any student of government will tell you, however, that 80% of the money a government raises goes to personnel for salaries and benefits. The bulk of the tax increase will go to the bloated salaries of Hampton's Administrative personnel. It does NOT go to pay for services to the people who live here. The roads in Hampton are like the mountains on the Moon, for example.

Employees have not had a raise in over 5 years. The 2% raise that was suggested for school employees is not extravagant when you consider that insurance has risen 22%, the amount they pay to VRS has increased and that employees are taking a four day furlough. I'm wondering if your benefits have taken the same punch as school employees.

Gammler,
Are you suggesting that school employees work for free? It's called employment and just like at your job, these employees deserve to make a living that is competitive and fair. I think your boss is probably overpaying you and we should ask for a reduction in pay.:)

If one looks at the benefits the public pchools provide, a 6 hour day, a 9 month year, and what the public schools produce, I think teachers are adequately compensated. Compensation should be based on production.

SIx hours a day? you are extremely funny. Teachers have students 7 hours a day. They are required to come in about 45 minutes early each day to get ready for the days lessons. Then it's after school faculty meetings, after school tutoring, time spent after school grading papers or meeting with parents. They also spend many weekends supporting children at sporting events because they have parents who are unable to offer support or chaperoning weekend events. All of these 'extra' activities are unpaid. I am so happy for what these hard working individuals do for our youth. Parents no longer send their children to school with school supplies. In order for children to be successful, teachers take care of that too. As for being compensated for what they produce? Another funny. When will you hold parents accountable for what they are NOT producing?

Oh and it's School; not pchool. I know this is just a typographical error but how wonderful that my typing teacher taught me how to type. lol

Some teachers put in the hours. Some don't. Administrators you see 2 times a day. 1. In the morning in front of the schooll, all decked out in clothers and glasses. 2. At the end of the school day, same as 1. In between, these 125 thousand dollar bums are in their office with the door close and either: Sleeping, working on an online degree or just talking to their friends on the phone.

Very true. I know that NNPS has a truck that goes around all day to schools picking up broken materials, expensive. They have a warehouse where they dump all this shyt, hopefully to be fixed. On the back is a bar code with the 'property of NNPS' labeled. The bar code is then omitted from the computer.

I know. It's bad. My kid says nothing works 1/2 the time in the computer lab at Lee Hall. My ex refuses to home school.
