There can be few more sobering experiences for drunken drivers than being stopped by Officer Scott Mounger. Read more

Check your typing first of all genius.

All the problems in Newport News can't be solved by one police officer. The defensive replies should just back off and give the guy a break. He's doing his job.

With all the criminal activity in Newport News, frankly, I'm glad any cop in the city can single out problems that others aren't paying attention to and take care of business.

A celebration for 60 DUI arrests? What the &%$@?!!
Shouldn't one celebrate 0, before 60?
Police officers should not be rewarded for doing their job. Numbers mean nothing, unless they equal 0, in law enforcement. 0 is success. Anything over that, is failure.

My cousin is a Newport News police officer, so I do care, damn it. I worry for him all of the time.

He's a good person, and I can only hope awards for failure would be frowned apon by him.

Sure, busting 60 people for DUI can be considered a success, but in reality, this guy is just doing his job. True success for a police officer, stat wise, should be 0.

It's impossible for an officer to achieve zero stats, but that is no reason it shouldn't be their goal. "To Protect and to Serve" is their true job. Not to "Harass and Disturb", as they do now.

I'm not saying i'm all for drinking and driving, or anythign of the sort. I am just sayng that 60 DUI arrests is nothing celebrate. I would praise him more if he gave these 60 people rides home. Not that they didn't deserve what they got, they damn sure did, but the idea of celebrating DUI arrests like a football stat, is just sad. The best stat a police officer can have, is how many nights they make it hom to their family.

As he states; most Drunks drive between midnight and 4 AM, but redlight runners are sober kilers 24/7.

I don't personally know anyone killed by a drunk, but do know 2 kiled by a sober, screw everyone else attitude, redlight runner.

Go after the redlight runners equally as well as the drunks.

I hope that the officer does not see all the nagative things you all wrote. You all make me sick. This officer worked his ass off. He could have drove around seeing nothing like many officers do.

Now if this officer does not get 60 this year, his boss will call him in the officer and ask him what the problem is.

You all are cowards. This guy works very hard trying to make people safe while I sit behind a building on duty talking on my cell phone, reading and watching DVD's.

Say bad things about me, not this officer. He also has to be in court a lot. While he is in court, I am at home sleeping.

If he misses court, the Chief might fire him. I never have court so I never miss court. So I will never be fired.

You know, for as long as I have been in this field, that is exactly the way it works. People will attack the police officer that did his job well. They feel that this police officer may even have a personal agenda geared to put them in jail. All the while, the ones who do nothing all day and night are able to avoid public persecution by doing nothing at all. Those are the ones you need to watch.

I dont know Scott Mounger, but I do know that his work alone prevented more crimes than any of us will ever know about. And in my opinion, that is point of law enforcement. All of you cowards who sit at your desk Mon-Fri and bash this officer for protecting his family and yours... well enough said for anyone who graduated high school.

MADD LIES

United States

#57 Feb 24, 2008
Stop believing the lying MADD witches. Current draconian DUI Laws are doing nothing to save lives and nothing but a well orchestrated media campaign by neo-prohibitionist MADD.

Instead of believing the pro-law enforcement hype in this paper, get educated on the real facts (not lies by the MADD led NHTSA).

www.duiblog.com
www.ridl.us
www.gettmadd.com

Read / google "Big Brother's New Prohibition." If you still believe MADD and your MADD puppet legislators aren't lying with statistics, our country is in trouble.

I was born and raised in Denbigh. I graduated Denbigh High in '97. Even when I was in school there was talk of gangs...Crips and Bloods! At that time if was just talk or gossip, signs of the gangs presence was that predominant. However, driving trough Denbigh a person knew where not to go. In refererence to crime or unsafe area's of town. There was a member of my church that was mugged in broad day light in a grocery store parking lot. Since then I have moved to Texas, but am returning to Denbigh this summer. This should be an interesting homecoming!

Let's have all Newpoprt News and Hampton Police, park out front of the driveways on Chesapeake Ave, Friday nights. This will take a bite out of crime. Next stop, the Post Office. Fiunally, to top 60 DUIs, let's head over to Harpoon Larrys.
Exactly. Hampton cops can sit outside any bar on a Friday or Saturday night for a month and rack up 1000 dui arrest. What a system. Give a business a permit to sell alcohol in your community tax them then arrest and fine the patrons. I wonder how many dui arrest are made after the city block parties and city backed Bay Days festivals?

You sound like you might have finished 9th grade. I go out drinking every weekend. I call a cab to get home.

We own a towing company and we have been averaging about 5 DUI pulls a week! That is just us. I am not sure what the other companies have but that should speak volumes about the problem. Since we are averaging 5 a week-they are the ones that are CAUGHT!

This is the most appropriate and responsible post on this topic, given the weak arguments.

The nice thing is that this officer is actually observing drivers who may be threats. While I think the anti-DUI crowd is overzealous (MADD is right up there with the ACLU, the NEA, and the AARP in my disliked groups), this sort of enforcement is what's needed to get dangerous drunks off the roads. It's certainly a lot better than sobriety checkpoints.

FYI the woman who started MADD was arrested on Drunk Driving charges last year. Seems kind of ironic.
