Nice try Chief Fox. But it does not work. Common sence would dictate putting criminals behind bars. Not inviting them to drop off old, rusty, inoperatable firearms that would most likely not be causing the murder, rape and robbery on our streets. Promote and hire officers that are crime fighters and leave the liberal gun by backs to L.A. and New York.

I like these "buy backs". i collect junk guns for the sole purpose of selling them to these clowns. I can easily turn a $80 investment into $250. Even with gift certificates, that is $250 I don't have to spend out of my own pocket=$250 to spend on new guns and ammo;)

Many teens attempt suicide on impulse,
and there’s no second chance with a gun.

Does a gun in the home increase the
chance of suicide? YES!

THIS PROGRAM IS NOT ONLY ABOUT CRIME!

In states where there are more guns, more people commit suicide.
Studies have shown that the risk of suicide is 4 to 10 times higher in homes with guns than in those without.
If the gun is a handgun or is stored loaded or unlocked, the risk of suicide is even higher.

JUST MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, WE MIGHT GET ONE OF THESE GUNS OUT OF A HOUSE BEFORE A KID USES IT.

Out of your statistics, how many of these were "impulse" suicides? The vast majority of suicides are planned and well thought out for a long time.

For us to say that (guns don't kill it is the man using it) is true and is even-more so reason to take them from his hand. All men and women are capable of murder, robbery or, any of these things that can cause us to err by a hand-gun.Hand-guns were made for killing thats it! There are by far more non-gun owners then there are gun owners yet gun owners look to the criminal as a scape goat to justify their rights without even considering the rights of non-gun owners who are the victims of gun crimes. Even legal gun owners are murdered at the hands of the same. How many resgistered guns have murdered or should I say how many men behind the gun. Don't be so fast of demanded that your rights not be violated at the risk of others> Consider your ways.

You are projecting your own weakness on the rest of us. I have spent the months of October, November and December in hunting camps for decades. There were always many guns available and never has anyone been murdered.

Then let's talk about risk. More innocent individuals have been killed by police officers, then individuals defending themselves. Flash a wallet and draw 40 rounds at yourself. And what about the risk of being unarmed and attack by a gang. Do you want to repeal the right of free association?

I like your example and this one too: Going to war to preserve peace makes as much sense as screwing to preserve virginity.

Might save a life - consider this:

FACT: The availability of firearms are positively associated with the number of firearm suicides. The more firearms in a population, the more often firearms will be used to commit suicide.

FACT: There exists NO POSITIVE CORRELATION between the availability of firearms and the TOTAL number of suicides.

Suicide has everything to do with socio-economic conditions. There are countless professional studies/publications that detail this exact phenomena.

While I would agree that the Gun buy back program is not the ideal situation, several things are for sure regarding those guns being collected. That they will never be used to commit a crime with either the operable ones or inoperable ones, weapons that turn out to be stolen will be returned in most cases to their rightful owners, and the guns collected will not fall into the wrong hands. The minimal amount for the gift cards are surely a deal compared to the costs of someone getting killed, maimed or injured. Not to mention, robbed or assaulted. Don't forget the costs involved in investigating a crime if the guns were used in a crime, hospital bills, funeral expenses, loss of wages, etc.

The minimal amount for the gift cards are surely INSIGNIFICANT compared to the costs of someone getting killed, maimed or injured BECAUSE THE POLICE WERE NOT PRESENT AND THE VICTIM WAS UNABLE TO PROTECT THEMSELVES WITH A LAWFULLY CARRIED FIREARM. Not to mention, robbed or assaulted. Don't forget the costs SAVED in NOT investigating a crime SINCE A GUN WAS USED TO PREVENT IT. Hospital bills, funeral expenses, loss of wages, etc. WILL NOT BE OF ANY CONCERN SINCE THE PERSON THAT WAS SAVED BY USING THE LAWFULLY CARRIED FIREARM IS A GOOD, HARDWORKING, TAXPAYING CITIZEN.

This is laughable. The only people turning in their guns are people that need them to ward off thugs. Give them their guns back.

Only Chief Fox got it right. The pro-gunners, the anti-gunners, and the academics just don't get it.
Buy backs are not meant to take guns from people who want or need them. Buy backs may not cause great reductions in violent crime.
What buybacks do though is give those people who do not care to continue the safe keeping of the gun that they possess, the opportunity to turn it in to police before it winds up in the wrong hands.
I spent a career as a law enforcement officer working undercover buying guns from people who thought I was a criminal.
Many of the guns I bought were those guns of indifference that the possessor was tired of safe keeping.
They gave it to somebody or had it taken by somebody. Then that somebody sold it to me thinking that I was part of their delusional underground world.
Chief Fox is correct in giving these guns of indifference a safer place to end up instead of on the street.
