Thank you so much for this post. I, too, am a single mother, raising two beautiful and healthy African American children without any type of assistance. Not only am I the head of my household, sole breadwinner, and custodial parent of my little ones, I also am paying for my college education out of pocket with no government aid. Frankly, many of the posts I have read on this site anger me. The young man that was murdered at the farmer's market was not a "gang-banger." Since when is there no such thing as an innocent victim?? And just to clarify, Newport News is not all bad and all black are not uneducated, ignorant thugs.

People, even Andre, make choices in life. Those choices determine much of what will happen to them. Did he deserve it? Is that the right question? Possibly the better question is did he choose it by the choices he made and the people with whom he chose to associate?

Shall we wait to see what the evidence says? She was driving the car reported to be at the scene - and she just so happened to have a gun. It sounded as though she tried to hide that gun. Was it the murder weapon? Time will tell if she was involved or just trying to protect her son. Either choice was the wrong choice.

I know my children. That is part of my job as a parent. I have made it a priortiy to know them, their friends, their problems, and their strengths. It is my number one priority.

You are correct...we can raise our children with the best intentions and have their best interest at heart but when they are out with their friends and peer pressure is upon them you do not know what they will do...this is when you continue to pray for them and hope that everything you taught them will somehow flood their minds and do what they know is right to do....

No one should be glad that these young men are dead. Yes they have records and they haven't always made the right choices. But they are still people with families and friends. I didn't know either of them very well. But I do know that Andre was attempting to turn his life around. Seperating himself from many of the people he use to hang with. Working. Applying to school. Yes he faced charges but whats missing is the details. He was more often than not in the wrong place at the wrong time. These young men had promise and potential dispite there mess ups. I'm saddened to know that they have died so young. Rev. Jackson
