Hi!
Our family is considering moving to Hampton, VA (from small-town, SW-VA). A job at Fort Monroe is the reason for the move. Could you please advise me on:
*Best neighborhoods to live in
*Best school syste
*Crime rate?
Any and all input will be appreciated. Everything is pretty much new to me. Please help.
Thanks!

Ft Montoe is fine but don't go any lower,ie, Buckroe, Phoebus, etc.

If you are in the F.M. area, you are zoned Jane Bryan Elem. School. This school is horrible and has been for years.(reliable sources). Middle Sch. will put you in the Jones 1/2 way House school unless your kids are gifted, Spratley. High School is 0-4. All are horrible.Home school or privte!

Crime is rampant in Hampton. Courts are jammed with backloads of felonies amd minor crimes. Many crimes go unreported and this is why there is going to be a Circuit Cort built soon. Fir Fod's sake, if you haven't closed on your home ot West, don't. Hampton is a jellhole.

You need to move to a white area like Poquoson or West Point. Crime is low, schools are ok considering they are public. Hampton is a cess pool.

I am 1 of 1000s of former Hampton residents having moved out in the 70s-2000. I'm in Tabb, others are " York County, JCC, Isle of Wight, Gloucester, another state, etc. Those reply posts may sound nutty, but they are true. It's a dangerous place to live. Think of your children!!

Boy, things sure have changed since I was born and grew up there. Glad my family moved us to the river years ago, if this is what it has become. So sad to me.....it's hard to read these comments.

We are a social expierment gone bad.Integration in the early 70s with crosstown busing was the beginning of the end. When cities go bad, they never return.

I went to college in Norfolk in the 80's. I couldn't wait to get out of this hellhole named Tidewater. Even Va Beach and williamsburg are nasty compared to the Western US.
We 'escaped' in 1988 and came back every year or so to visit and I didn't think this dump could get worse but it did. I'm SO very glad we raised our kids in the NorthWest instead of this trash heap they call tidewater.

Now we're back for a couple of years since my dad probably a year or so away from dying and we're here to help our parents.

We've spend the last 23 years in the Pacific Northwest and the southwest - both wonderful places.
Here's why I hate it here, especially on the peninsula:

-People drive horribly, aggressively, and are rude

-The traffic lights are on timers(using 70's technology). I've spent wayy too much time here sitting at a red light when I'm the only car at the intersection - STUPID.(out west the lights sense this and give you a green)

-Racial tensions - still many racists here - that goes for whites and blacks.

-Blight. Most shopping centers/strip malls are at about 30% capacity. This empty shops really make things look 'nice'.

-Roads are terrible - potholes EVERYWHERE

-Incredibly, food prices are higher than we've ever seen compared to much bigger places in the NW and SW. WTF they think this is ? Usually you'd think things are cheaper in a depressed area but nooooo.

-General Civil apathy and laziness. Many times you see people jaywalking across big 6 lane roads, holding up traffic away from intersections. Stupid idiots. Also on this topic, I have NEVER seen a town where SO many lazy, rude, inconsiderate slobs just leave their shopping carts in the parking spaces. I'm not talking about 1 or 2, I've seen up to 25 carts scattered across the parking spots. This really tells you a lot about a place and the attitudes of the people.

I could go on and on and on.. I can't wait to get out of here but we have to "do our time" to spend time with our family, who we obviously love very much or we wouldn't come out to this hell-hole of an area...

Anyway, Welcome ! I used to live on Ft. Monroe and it's a pretty cool place.

Find a place in Poquoson. That is an island of decency (understand this is relative so I'm saying comparatively it's better, but it still is nasty compared to western US) and it's not that far of a commute for your husband.

Hampton is a very dangerous city. If you have white children, they will be targets of blacks twice their size, pedophile and ignorant schools.

He may want to live in Matthews Co., a 1 to 2 hr. drive or better yet, buy a helicopter for travel.

Rebecca, your best bet would be to shop in person. Every city here has its good and bad areas. As a Newport News Police Officer, I would recommend asking a few police officers about specific areas. Not just one officer per city, but a few. Schools also have their good and bad. I chose to work extra hours to pay for private school. My kids school had its problems, but it is harder to hidethe problems from parents. Most schools will not report crime to the Police, mine included. But with the controlled size of the student body, I was aware of almost everything thanks to gossiping kids.

York County schools are the best in the area. We even have folks renting homes in Y.C. so their kids can go to the schools. Known cases of this from cities and northern counties close by. Newport News is rotten to the core and Hampton is worse!

You're doing the right thing - research.

this cop is full of krap. Fact if you did shop in person, go to eastend NN on Friday at 11 pm and start asking people for directions to the nearest Saks 5th ave. You wouldn't last 1 hour and cop lady pig will be placing number cones for each shell casing. The prover, "All schools have their...blah" is also a load of shht.

Who said anything about a department store? So Kool, you are saying that if she asked a police officer about ares of their cities she would be killed. Go take your mess and get back in your padded cell.

Police would be the last person I would ask about anything, unless where the nearest 7-11 store is located.

Reply--Police know nothing about what goes on in city schools. The 'resource officers' have a little room and sit all day. They are told by the Ed. Dept. to not bother/interfere with the learning process.

It's window dressing and students know they can't do anything.
