Accident on Interstate 90 near exit 8
#1 Jun 3, 2008
I had the distinct pleasure of being stuck in that jam. This is the third time in 6 months I have been stuck in traffic for more than an hour because of a tractor trailer colliding with something on the Mass Pike.
This is getting absurd. Especially considering that there are so few exits between Palmer and Framingham (50 miles with only 7 exits? In the south you can substitute exits in for mile-markers!), it's incredibly painful to be a commuter these days. Not more than a few months ago there was the wreck by exit 11A that backed up traffic for 5 hours on a weekday morning, all because on the 6 mile stretch between 11 and 11A there is no place to get off, or even turn around and take a detour.
Certainly, something needs to be done to reduce the number of accidents like this. But before that, something needs to be done to allow for traffic to be diverted around these accidents, because they only seem to be on the rise.

I agree that there should be more places to leave the pike, in case you went the wrong way or for whatever reason.
Between Westfield (exit 3) and Lee (exit 2) I think it's like 35 miles or something. I accidentally went west from Westfield (I wanted East, I had a brainfart) and had to make a turn around in one of the spots that are for cops and municipal vehicles only... I wasn't going to drive ALL the way to Lee just to turn around and go back to Chicopee...

My daughters and I passed the scene of this accident last night shortly after it took place. Emergency personel had yet to arrive. What i would assume were average citizens were out of their vehicles directing traffic, and controling the area. A group of about three or four of them were kneeled in front of a young man, half his body laying on the road and the rest pinned under his vehicle. Smoke bellowed from the vehicles, the contents of what i would assume the camper litered the road. I was concerned for my safety and that of my children when passing the smoking vehicles. And still others were out there helping this man and the others involved. I said a prayer for all of them. Then I did the only thing i could to help, I called 911 from my cell phone to be sure emergency personel were on their way.The 911 operator instantly informed me that they were already aware of the accident and thanked me for calling.
I will continue to keep the people involved and their families in my prayers and invite all to do the same. I would like to thank thoose who were out of there vehicles helping the accident victims, for doing so. If ever I am in need of help i hope i will be as fortunite as thoose involved in last nights accident.

I just saw the pics and video on wwlp website. Very great coverage and video, I'm impressed. Thankful this didn't cause a train reaction, and the citizens helped. I wish a speady recovery for all involved.
