July 9-10, 2010 at Firemans Park~

Support your friends and family as they join the American Cancer Society in battling cancer.
How Donations Make a Difference

Thanks in part to the generous contributions to the American Cancer Society Relay For Life, the Society is saving lives by helping people stay well and get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back. These are just a few examples of how contributions make a difference in the Society’s lifesaving mission.

Helping people stay well

Our telephone counseling service, the American Cancer Society Quitline®, doubles a person’s chances of quitting tobacco for good.
We develop guidelines for recommended cancer screenings and nutrition and physical activity, so people know what tests they need to find cancer early and how to help prevent the disease.
We provide tips, tools, and online resources to help people set goals and stay motivated to eat healthy and maintain an active lifestyle.
Helping people get well

Our phone lines are open every minute of every day and night to help connect people with the answers they need. Each year, we provide information, help, and support to the nearly one million individuals who call us at 1-800-227-2345. In addition, our Web site, cancer.org , offers access to the latest information and news on cancer and helps people locate programs and services in their area.
We offer an online support community for cancer survivors and caregivers to share stories and find support.
We assist cancer patients in need with getting transportation to and from their treatments and offer help with free lodging for cancer patients and their caregivers.
Through our clinical trials matching service, we connect patients with thousands of different treatment options.
With sites at hospitals and treatment centers across the country, our American Cancer Society Patient Navigator Program provides one-on-one guidance to people facing cancer through every step of their journey.

Finding cures

We’ve had a hand in nearly every major cancer breakthrough of the last century, including confirming the link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer, establishing the link between obesity and multiple cancers, developing drugs to treat leukemia and advanced breast cancer, and showing that mammography is the most effective way to detect breast cancer.
We’re the largest private funder of cancer research in the United States.
We fund researchers with cutting-edge ideas, often early in their careers. Of the researchers chosen for Society funding, 44 have gone on to win the Nobel Prize, the highest honor in scientific achievement.
Fighting back

The majority of Americans are now covered by a smoke-free law, thanks in part to the efforts of the Society and our nonpartisan advocacy affiliate, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action NetworkSM (ACS CAN).
We help mobilize communities to fight back against cancer with events such as Relay For Life and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer®.
We have helped uninsured, underinsured, and low-income women get breast and cervical cancer screening tests and follow-up treatment since 1991 and, along with ACS CAN, we have successfully fought for legislation protecting this care.
By supporting Relay For Life, you help make the American Cancer Society’s mission possible, and that helps us all move closer to our ultimate goal: a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

This is a rough draft of my submission to our local paper, their article was ALL wrong and had this for a title: "WEARY walkers end relay for life event" Mine: CHEERFUL Walkers Close Out Annual Relay For Life I was going to write you a brief summary about the Relay for Life ..but your wrongful title and information of last weeks paper made me do it sooner than later. Also lengthier than planned as I want you and your readers to "FEEL" this event. It is put on every year~ and I PROMISE you all that IF IT RAINS next year...we will still be there with our umbrellas and we will have an extra one for each of you too. I do thank YOU for the coverage of this event. The first correction I will make is this~ NONE of us were weary. Did our feet and legs and backs hurt? YOU betchya'. However, NO one complained. We mentioned it with smiles on our faces and CHEER with in our hearts. Cheer because we were making a difference in the lives of cancer patients. The real people that have reason to complain of pain and suffering. The teams that showed up and stayed through the rain and thunder storms were a group of people that in spite of the weather , wrapped ourselves in newspaper and duct tape for a fashion show, crowed like roosters for contest... walked a few laps in Jammie's with our stuffed animals , donned crazy hats~ and giggled with our children while we danced to todays music and a few line dances! We ate A LOT of food. We walked in the rain, we jumped into puddles. We listened to live music and a DJ. Teams have many games, food and little events to raise more money for the American Cancer Society. Due to the rain, some teams did not arrive. Nor did the public crowd. The public is usually where extra funds toward the money total comes from~ Well... when we realized that "WE" hundred or so were it for "public crowd"...thos e of us there spent our extra money as we played the games put on by other teams. We ate FOOD sold by other teams~ and we bought raffle tickets for various items to support the teams that were there. We filled hundreds of luminary bags with sand and a candle . These were purchased by loved ones of cancer patients - survivors and those that will not see another Birthday. As we filled the bags, and read the names to ourselves we felt the person IN our HEARTS. We silently thanked the families and friends for sharing their loved one with us. Tears were near by in each of us and when we accidentally picked up a bag that had a name we recognized and of a person we loved....we couldn't hold back tears any longer. We cried. We hugged each other and we shared our loved one with others as they held us. The weather was too wet to set the bags around the track as usually practiced. WE DID however, thanks to the wonderful fire company and its members, get to set up the luminaries in the fire truck bay in a pattern of a path~ and a heart and also with the word HOPE spelled out with the bags. As we gathered with our candles to light the hundreds of luminaries, we surrounded the bags and listened to a beautiful ladies choir group sing songs that pulled at our hearts . We were asked to light the candles in silence. As a group of near a hundred lit the candles. The truck bay was NOT silent. Silence was broken by sobs of grief and the sounds of people trying to suppress crying. Praying was heard , as loved ones prayed for the living and thanked God for the time they had with those that did not beat cancer. After all of the candles were lit, we walked the path with in the bay. Leaving the bay when the luminary celebration was over was very hard to do. As it felt like saying goodbye to the people the bags were dedicated to. We ate a wonderful breakfast put on for us by the local__________ PS.. We were told during the closing ceremonies that the total raised was over $44,000 ~ Not $12,000 as reported.
