Thanks to the Pioneer Press for the respect showed in this article. My husband was a close friend of Jacob's. He will be missed by his friends and family. God bless.

Ditto the above comment by Elizabeth. We knew Jacob and his family since Jacob was in elementary school. This is very tragic and my heart goes out to Jacob's friends and family.

All the cop had to do was soot the gun out of his hand they didn't need to kill him, he was asking for help not death by a cop. think cops before you shoot if you are a good marksman you could of got the gun out of his hans

St. Croix County cops are completely incompetent. there is no reason they needed to fire 10 shots at this guy. That is excessive and I hope the family takes legal action. It just goes to show you how poor our legal system is at addressing mental illness. My thoughts are with this family.

So St Croix County Cops are incompetent huh? Change the situation around. If you were a cop with a family and were in the same situation and with a loaded rifle pointed at you, wouldn't you make the same decision as the officers did? Perhaps putting your life at hand as well as your co-workers would make you think differently. It is easy for people to point fingers and place blame but until you are in the same situation and know ALL of the details you have no right to judge someone elses actions. I am just greatful that nobody else was injured in the situation. If you think cops, especially St Croix County officers, go around purposely hurting people and as you point out-killing people- you need to read the paper and watch the news a little more attentively. Cops have a difficult job as it is--let alone having to make split second decisions that might not necessarily provide the outcome that you expect.

You're obviously not competent enough to think. When somebody points a loaded shotgun at you, you REACT. I don't care what kind of training one has. Try it sometime, we'll see what you do. Clown.

So apparently you know a lot about law enforcement. Maybe instead of shooting off your mouth and posting something you obviously know nothing about you would research the topic before shooting off your mouth. Who are you going to call when you need help, who are you going to call when you are in an accident. I guess you won't call anyone as "cops" are incopetent.

Wow, do you think it is a John Wayne Western. You are as ill informed as the rest of the public.

If a person was attempting to jump off of a tall building then law enforcement would be able to assess mental illness...when faced with a loaded weapon, conversation is limited, he was given the opportunity to drop his weapon and continue dialogue.

Law enforcement agents do not aspire to run on out and shoot people dead, they are human as well.

This is a very unfortunate situation where no one was able to see his depression until it was too late and add alcohol to the mix that night and it was a suicide wish.

The two deputies have to live with this incident for the rest of their lives as well as the affected family and it affects even more who are friends and family of all parties.

There is a lot to take into consideration in this event and making assumptions based on emotion only hurts the situation, as painful as the loss is, nothing will change this.

To address the "incompetency", you live in a town that is covered by St. Croix County Sheriff's Department...next election maybe you should run. You don't know the specifics of the case, don't speculate on what excessive is.
