I haven't experienced a snakehead, yet. But I think (I could be wrong) that Asians relish the fish. If they start showing up in the Colonial Beach area I think we should turn lemons into lemonade and let them be fished extensively until they're gone, if ever.

An eighteen pound snakehead was recently caught at Occoquan. At 18 pounds it would have qualified for a record, except for the fact it had already been eaten before the angler knew it would have broken the previous record of 17 lbs +/-.

They are in the Colonial Beach area and are being fished. It is illegal to possess a live snakehead or to release one. When caught they must be killed by law. There is an existing commercial market for the species. However only licensed commercial fisherman can sell them. So if you are simply a recreational fisherman, eat them yourself and dont try to sell them or you could find yourself in a fishy situation!

You can farm them w/o tractor :) I bet w/all the oriental resturants in the region a non-import source could help the business comunity save money, ensure freshness AND make a profit. People will pay for what they want, this would make it fresh, less exspensive and convienient :)

Where did you think they went? They dont migrate to the bay or ocean like many of our fish. They are a freshwater fish that can survive in brackish water. They dont "walk" south for the Winter.

Good article about snakeheads in The Washington Post today, Health & Science section (E).

As water temperatures drop, the snakehead buries itself in mud to hibernate for the winter months. When water temperature exceeds 50 degrees, the fish emerges from hibernation. Breeding begins as of yesterday and peaks around June 6th, then tapers off around September 12th.
