UI wants distribution rate case reopened

The United Illuminating Co. on Wednesday asked state regulators to reopen a distribution rate case that was decided in January 2006, because the company is not earning its allowed return.

This proposed rate increase is based on greed, deceit, and contradictory statements...

UI is promoting conservation, but claims that conservation --- reduced electricity usage by consumers -- is a fundamental economic problem for them that must be remedied by a rate increase!... Now, if there were increased usage, then that would also merit a rate increase because of the need to upgrade capacity/infrastructure... Ad infinitum, around and around the argument goes... The consumer will always get screwed no matter what the economic climate or circumstances of the utilities... A rate increase is always justifiable and is always granted by the utility/lobbyist-owned, corrupt DPUC...

Clearly, my fellow citizens/consumers, what we have in our public utilities and the DPUC is an unholy partnership that is doing irreparable harm to the citizens, businesses, and economy of Connecticut. It is time for Connecticut and its municipalities to seize the electric utilities by eminent domain and totally take the private profit motive out of the electric energy picture in Connecticut. Let the government (state and municipalities) provide the electricity and kick any "profits" back into a program to development and implement alternative energy sources and into the budgets of the over-taxed municipalities of Connecticut...

The utilities -- all of them -- electric, gas, water, et al., have had unfair, unjustifiable profits for too long! It is time for the government to do its job and protect the people by stepping in and taking-over the job of providing the people with all essential utilities. There is no place for monopolies controlling the essentials of daily life in this day and age...

In the same vein, the federal government should nationalize the oil industry and use any profits to develop and implement green alternative energy sources and create a situation of energy independence for this country!...

Goodbye DPUC, UI, Northeast Utilities, SCG, Aquarian, and all of the other blood-sucking utility-monopolies in this state. You're all in the wrong century!(Goodbye EXXON-MOBIL!)Change is coming!

Our CT State Attorney General should be taking a careful look into this nonsense. UI should wake up and recognize that there's no such thing as guaranteed profits. If you mismanage the business, make poor assumptions and do not plan and act when market conditions change then your fate is your own to deal with. No more bail outs. No more return trips to the DPUC 'hat in hand'. The State really needs to take a much harder line since many of the residents have no other viable option other than getting our electricity from UI. Could it be that UI would not be 'permitted' to have a loss in any given year? Appears they could use a big dose of reality, and not hike prices simply because residents are conserving or otherwise using less energy. Any other real-world company would deal with that by cutting costs or implementing new growth strategies...and absolutely NOT by raising prices as that would lead to a death spiral for any company not having a monopoly. UI = Ultimate Incompetents.

its a joke that finally people are trying to save energy and money and the utilities then inturn charge more for the energy because thay fell they are not making enough. if they open the case and allow them to raise our rates yet again it would be a crime. I am really lookig into putting solar and my roof for electricity and geothemal for heating and cooling. hopefully i can get off the grid and free myself from this energy monkey on my back. then i wil look @ buying an electrical car. maybe the tesla if the prx comes down a bit.

"Despite the drop in its distribution business, UIL's investment in the nearly completed Middletown-to-Norwalk transmission project allows it to more than double its income from the transmission side, Torgerson said."

Ahh ha, the real reason for the power line to LI via CT. At least they finally admitted it was about increased revenue, and NOT to upgrade the old lines...lying bastards.

I'm going to look into solar panels for my home. I'm tired of paying $270 a month on the budget plan and I have a small house.

The article says 5%, but you are correct, it was close to 50%.

This is ridiculous. I went from paying an average $55 a month to $190 within 1 year due to their increases!

If I recall correctly, UI rates doubled in January of 07, where’s all of that money gone??? With gas at over $4/gallon, grocery costs skyrocketing and local towns taxing their middle class residents beyond the brink of survival, where exactly are we supposed to come up with the additional cash to cover UI's butt. Basically they're saying that if we’re good girls and boys and conserve energy at an even greater rate than we’ve already managed to do, their outrageous monthly UI bill won't go up too much. Here's an even better idea Mr. Anthony J. Vallillo, president and CEO...why don't YOU TAKE A PAY CUT OF your over inflated ANNUAL salary, which I'm sure is in the multi-millions of dollars, ELIMINATE YOUR BONUS (WHICH IS ALSO IN THE MULTI-MILLIONS) AND STRIP YOU OF ALL YOUR STOCK OPTIONS. Not only will this probably come close to making up SUPPOSED $14 million shortfall, but then you’ll have a much better understanding of the impact of UI rate increases on your struggling customers.

SO WHAT IF THERE'S A SHORTFALL OF PROFITS!?
UI INCREASED THE RATES BY 50% FROM THE PREVIOUS YEAR'S RATES - THEY ARE ALREADY RIPPING US OFF ALONG WITH GASOLINE / OIL PRICES, AND NATURAL GAS. I DIDN'T GET A 50% INCREASE IN PAY AND NEITHER DID THE UTLIITIES' EMPLOYEES (MANAGEMENT - HOWEVER, WHO KNOWS WHAT THE GOT?)

Why should I have to pay a rate increase because of uncollected accounts. Why should I have to pay more because I save energy. This does not make any sense. We just had a rate increase of 50% in 2007. Now they want us to pay more because they are not going to get there BIG PROFITS. This is totally insane

Before their last hike, my electric bill was about $150. Now it's always between $300 and $400 -- and I have done everything I can to use the minimal amount of electricity. No AC in the summer, no electric heaters in the winter. I'm never comfortable in my house and the bill keeps going up and up and up!

This is totally insane, they want to raise rates in part due to uncolletable accounts? Think about that for one second and you will see that it makes absolutely no sense. if they want to make a profit, maybe they should think about reducing the rates?
We can barely pay our bill now and we try to do everything we can to conserve energy. Go ahead and raise your rates, then you'll really know what it feels like to have uncollectable accounts.
