I don't know about Black Bottom, but I know a lot of people have died in the last two years. Sarah Hendricks, David Hendricks, Virginia Demory, Felecia Hill, Mary Jane Caudle, Bo Peep, Blue child, Rodney Robinson, Mrs. Linda Pittman, etc. If you know any mor please post. It has been awful. I know we all have to die, but Enfield people are leaving here and it's time to get real and get in church now.

First of all, how did the name Black Bottom come about and if the answer is during slavery well shame on the residents for allowing this to continue. Many of you posted about the crime and the lack of motivation of the residents. Do you know that "Black Bottom" has a negative conotation and the negative is reflected onto the residents especially the youth.

Think about it, people things at the bottom are always the lowest. The those of you who have ties to the community should convince your family and friends to petition to the town council to rename the place to reflect the positive.

People be a part of the solution not the problem! I would never reside or want my family or freinds to live in a place the says Black is at the Bottom!

Enfield has changed and opportunity has left, but the biggest challenge is social. The work ethic of the young need to be focused on volunteering to improve the community. "Even if you don't get paid"... The youths up to middle age should not be idle. Look at other cultures and communities that teach this. Kofi Annan started out as a janitor at the United Nations to later become the leader of the organization.

Have the children volunteer to fix up the community in exchange for a skill, a reference, for a potential job. No age is too young to volunteer.

In East Orange, NJ, it was prosperous, economically strong, mixed, upper class income, school with a high academic system. All was GREAT until the NEWARK, NJ riots. The "BAD ELEMENT" from Neward slowly moved to EAST ORANGE and Orange, NJ. This human cancer destroyed all that was good in two cities. Drugs, crime, you name the horror, it materialized there. Most of all my classmates and neighbors moved as far away as possible! The "LAND-OWNERS" are the problem....by letting the "bad element" be rented in their buildings. Common sense is: you KNOW you have a bad start when you're brown skinned. So, stay in school, do your best, work. Really work like everyone else (nine-to-five) and strive...STRIVE to go higher. You "might" not get to where you'd like to be, but at least you TRIED!...and That in itself...is success!!! Show the world that color really doesn't matter! Intelligence comes from within!

I grew up in Enfield. It was nothing really good about it then and things haven't chnaged much. What is going on? When I do visit it is so depressing. People with no jobs, school systems declining, drop out rates rising and poverty stricken black people with out a chance. People, change is what you need and if you don't change, you will never grow.
I have read several article concerning the Town of Enfield. All the comments written are very true. For those living out of town, let me report what has been going on for the last several years. You probable already know that Plant street has been paved and new water and sewe lines were installed. Chief buffaloe sponsored a back to school bash and a trunk or treat at the old fairgound. Over a thousand kids came out and were given school supplies. Enfield Middle and Inborden have a new school at a cost of 25 million dollars. We are in the process of building The Enfield Community Park at the old fairground. We have just install new playground equipment at a cost of $66,000. A new ball field and a building is also under construction at a cost of $200,000. The Town sponsored the new Job Link office located at the old administrative offices. This enable those that do not have transportaton access job and file claims. We have a new community center upstairs at the administrative offices that is available to the general public for games, exercise, and various types of entertainment. We thank Mayor Barbara Simmons and the board of commissioners for taking these bold steps to make Enfield a better place to work and live. We would like to see those that have left Enfield (after retirement) to consider moving back to Enfield and help us help our kids. They are our future. Please pray for our town.

It's not that the town has gone down but it's the LAZY people who don't care. And if you keep voting for the same people and they don't make a change then you will never get anywhere. Parents please raise your children to respect themselves and want more then you for a better life.I hated when my mother moved back to Enfield.(yes it is dead and nothing really there) I think if they develop a job system in Enfield then people will grow and the town will show some type of hope.

I don't know any thing about Black Bottom except that my grandmother lived there. Is Black Bottom the actual name of the town or is it just a nick name for the town if so what's the town name.

Thanks for your comments. Many people seem to concentrate on the negative in this thread. It is great to learn of improvement to the town. I left Enfield around 1962-3 after I finished the first grade. My parents returned almost every weekend while I was growing up, which has left a lasting memory of Enfield as a place worthy of care that it will continue to need. I hope that everyone will make small daily improvement to the town and I can guarantee you success.

Mr. Davis, it is refreshing to see/hear of the improvements that are being done in the town of Enfield. I'm originally from Enfield and grew up in Black Bottom, although I have not lived there in 20 years, my mother and the majority of my family still lives there so I do get back from time to time. It does sadden me when I return to see all of the young kids standing around on the corner idle with nothing to do..while I think that the playground is a wonderful addition to the city, I think that there needs to be some focus on providing some recreation for the teens (12-18), they are so lost. I also think that the utility system is insane. Halifax County/Enfield is one of the poorest counties/towns in the state of NC, and the residents have utility bills that are unaffordable for the average working person. My families bills have been as high as $600 (1 month). How is that possible? I live in a much bigger city, and that is more than my electric, gas, and water. How can the residents get ahead when they have to figure out how to pay this hefty bill. Please figure that piece out..because there is something terribly wrong with that...continued success to the town and residents

I met a young lady from Enfielf and she took me home to meet her family. During the scenic tour I witnessed some of the issues that are discussed in thid forum and I am appalled that the governmen has not done something about it unless they are involved in it. It does not matter what you try to do if you do not get involved and get rid of the infestation at the top and then start from within nothing you do will suceed. They will block you so removing them is paramount to taking care of the infestations that is preventing the Bottom from Rising.

All these comments and concerns are great, but if you don't have a solution then you must be part of the problem!I too grew up in Enfield and loved every minute of it.First of all, stop ececting these dead-beat people who haven't done absolutely nothing for Enfield...Elect people who are willing to get out of the title and get into the community, organize a group og people who you know have the network ability to get something done before it is to late. There are some intelligent and business savy people in Enfield, start going over people's heads, do something!!!I love my hometown and will hate to see it become a place nobody wants to come too because of crime and drugs!
