What's your problem? You don't even live in Dallas County. I live near Turkey barns and there are a lot worse things, like neighbors who think they should be able to tell you what you can do on your own property.
If you think you can pull this stuff on farmers, you need to think again. If you don't want to smell or see farm animals, live in a high rise where you can smell the perfume of a million cars and trucks instead, I know they would love to tell you what you can do with your property and what you can't.

My folks have owned their 5 acre property for 32 years, and now the new neighbors are building a mile long turkey barn about 60 feet from their house with the fans pointed directly at the house, and the view's of the mountains, meadows and forest completely blocked. They were planning on selling soon but I'm sure it will take the property value down a bit. Kind of a drag but I guess there's nothing you can do. Will it really smell that bad?

Mike that is what you call forcing a sale. they figure if they put the barn that close your folks will sell there land cheep. It works seen in done a lot of times. As for turkey barns They are good. It helps give people jobs and it keeps my fields green. I use the litter on my field and it works. Cheaper that the chemicals. As far as the one who started this. Buzz off.

Some of you are missing a point here. Your saying that people have the right to build a turkey barn or whatever on their property even IF it causes neighboring land owners discomfort and/or lowers property values.

So the future turkey grower has rights but the land owners next door have none? That's not right, that's VERY much wrong. Maybe not legal wrong in some areas but WRONG. Now have nothing against turkey growers but I would not want one moving in next door. Why, smell and yes there is some. Potential water pollution. Noise, semi's and machinery at night several times per year when the birds are being picked up.

Mike, I've never heard of a MILE long turkey barn. Most are 600 foot or less.

What's the old saying, "you are what you eat". In the future Dallas county will only be what it smells like? Some say it already had a head start before the turkey barns arrived.

Yes, we need turkey barns, yes, we need chicken whatever, we need beef, we need pork. There has to be a way to take care of the smell, we treat septic tanks to control the smell, What about the Ag. people, can't they come up with an idea that would also keep the cost down. Yes, when the wind is just right it stinks, but if research is done and careful study attempts have been made, there should be a simple solution to the situation. Then everybody will be happy.
