It would be nice to have a place that offered the kind of Deli selections that Whole Foods offers and it will be a sign of the gentrification that will help drive the rest of the hippies out

I am so proud of all my fellow Santa Cruz residents!!! I could have sworn that many people would have complained that this giant store was coming into our community! This should really help that part of town, and hopefully the lines at Trader Joes and Costo will dimminish! I am happy to see Whole Foods in Santa Cruz! Even if the prices are a bit high.

As far as I see it--Whole Foods is not a Bad Thing, and it's certainly a step up from the Albertson's that was there before. It'll be interesting to see if Whole Foods can compete with New Leaf in terms of local goods and fresh produce.

Regarding Costco, I've been pleasantly surprised by the Santa Cruz Costco warehouse. They've started carrying eco-friendly paper and cleaning products, which is a really big deal. While most of their produce is crap, they do stock organic frozen meals. Of course, going to Costco means you have to deal with Costco people..:)

My daughter has worked for the SC Costco since its opening. She's adorable, friendly and helpful. And Costco now carries good organic produce besides earth-friendly products.

I also find it interesting that no one in Santa Cruz has said a peep about this. There are some interesting things to know about Whole Foods like the man that pretty much owns it is anti-union, and used to be a big contributor to the republican party. He was also caught posting very negative comments about his rival, Wild Oats, while using an alias on financial websites. He was trying to spread negative info about them so the stock price would go down. Then he bought Wild Oats.
They also fly in their Organic produce from other countries where they use cheap labor to grow it. Bad wages for the growers. Bad for the environment because they are using jet fuel to bring in organic products.

I'm sure I'll stop in once or twice to take a gander, but based on my experiences in browsing at Whole Foods stores over the hill, I think I'll continue taking my business to Staff of Life & Shopper's Corner for produce, meat, and fish... hard to beat those establishments on quality or price IMO.

We all have the freedom to shop wherever we choose. This will become a new source for our local tax base as well as provide jobs. However, if you've been to Whole Foods, their prices are anything but cheap. When in San Francisco or the Valley and had few other options I was blown away at how expensive everything was. Their produce is not locale either. It's shipped in from all over the US, Mexico, Latin America, Asia, and the rest of the world. No low carbon points there. On a taste level, I just prefer local fresh produce. Staff of Life BY FAR has the best prices, excellent LOCAL produce, and a good selection of locally-caught seafood. But again, the choice is yours!

These stores will be so welcome, such a breath of fresh air. It is, indeed, all about choice. The plus will outweigh the minus as they will employ local folks. The produce issue is no different than at any other local stores. If you prefer sow bugs and worms in your produce, please do purchase at Staff of Life - I fully support free choice.

You say "It's shipped in from all over... Mexico, Latin America, Asia, and the rest of the world. No low carbon points there."

Good for you!

You finally realize mass immigration is ecologically unsustainable!
